3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
28th August 2012
Very hazy amber beer, good pale cream coloured head. Remarkable maple and bacon nose! Smooth palate with fine carbonation. Semi dry. Taste follows the snout - semi sweet maple with mild smoky bacon. The maple dominates. There are lesser notes of malt cream and hops but this beer really does what it says on the tin. Sweetish dry finish with mild minerals. A unique and tasty beer and an antidote to po faced over seriousness about beer! A few points off for drinkability - could not drink loads.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle at the Beer, Bocce and Boozer Tasting, London. Thanks Jack for landing this whale. Pours a light, hazy amber with a soft, white foam head. Toasted sugar and smoked malts are obvious in the nose, with lighter notes of caramel, bacon and cotton candy. Medium sweet flavor (not nearly as sweet as I had anticipated) with plenty of greasy bacon, caramel, mild earthy bitterness, nice smoke, ham. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Fairly sweet to finish with light smoke, light caramel, soft hops and restrained bacon. Honestly, I expected this to be some kind of intense novelty beer, but it’s actually just a pretty low-key smoked beer. Pretty decent overall.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. It pours an almost clear body, dark golden to amber in color and topped by a finger-thick, dense, light beige head. Quite a lot of maple syrup in the aroma, with smoked malts, sweetness, chocolate, roasted notes and a touch of burnt wood. Sweet on the palate, full-bodied and nicely carbonated. Chocolate, maple syrup, roasted malts, some bonfire, smoked malts and a faint touch of ham in the flavor. Pleasant bitterness lasting for a while. Very woody in the finish. Most definitely a beer that surprised in a nice way. Expected a mess, but it isn’t. Doubt I could down a bottle on my own, but a glass is fine. 130928
