UPDATED: FEB 10, 2012 Sample at Railroad - I have a painful association between Vicks 44 and any pairing of alcohol and cherry. It really does taint my impression. The limp body and flat flavors here didn’t help. Rerated 8 Feb 12 - I have noticed that Rohrbach has upped its game, and all their offerings have improved in balance and depth. Kaceys has benefited from this change, moving it from forgettable to something I will look forward to. Gone is the single notes, tasting like a reworked Highland.

Kacey’s Kristmas Ale dense, brownish amber ale without much carbonation. The off-white head is thin and dense. It leaves thin sheets of lacing on the glass. It has a spicy aroma, like coriander and nutmeg. The smell of malt is strong and sweet. It is medium-light bodied, smooth and pretty dry. The finish is a little gritty. It’s a pretty mellow flavor-- a touch sweet and a touch bitter. There are notes of greenery, spices and fruitcake. The aftertaste is bitter. I had a couple pints of this, while making home brew outside in sub-freezing weather, and it kept me warm.

On tap at The Old Toad in Rochester. Appearance: Chocolate/red/brown, off white head. Aroma: Cherry, chestnut and caramel. Palate: Medium. Flavor: Roasted malts, cherry, caramel, cinnamon, nutmeg, chestnut. Lots of different tastes come out as the beer sits. Overall: Awesome holiday beer. Very complex taste. Warming. It’s sweet and easy drinking, but not too sweet.

From Growler purchased at BotW. Dark brown with red shading, foamy white head. Smells, and ultimately tastes, like chocolate-covered cherries. It’s a sweet beer, not cloying, but definitely a glass of dessert. The downside is the body, which is a bit watery. This isn’t the hefty, warming winter brew that it should be.

Copper, thinnish white head. Nose is coppery malt, dark fruits especially plum. Flavor is caramel, bubblegum, malt, cocoa. Nice but the gum is slightly offputting

UPDATED: JAN 9, 2013 Amber. Aroma is spiced and attractive. Flavor is unknown, but a delicate mix of holiday scents and flavors. Nice winter ale.7/3/7/3/16

Growler. Dark dark garnet color with a thin creamy white head. Very nice aroma of spices and cream. Smells like amaretto! Flavors are smooth and rediculously easy to drink. Smooth, full mouthfeel. Easily one of the better Christmas beers I’ve had. 8/3/8/3/18

UPDATED: DEC 31, 2008 (draft @ Rohrbach’s - Ogden, NY) Deep red in color with a thick tan head. Aroma smells like Christmas in a glass. Lots of cloves, cherries, chocolate, cinnamon, and some nutmeg. Flavor is very sweet with tons of chocolate malt and cherries. Definitely tastes like a chocolate covered cherry. A little flat though.

On tap at Quimby’s. Great aroma of cherries. Flavor and balance improve with warming. Not too overpowering. Great finish. An excellent Christmas offering.

On tap, pours a deep, dark red with a thick off-white head that leaves some nice lacing. Dark malts and black cherries make up the aroma. Tastes malty, definite but not overwhelmingly cherry, and some chocolate at the end. Smooth and silky in the mouth, I really liked this one.
