COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Vanilla Porter is a complex English-style porter that was brewed with a wide variety of specialty malts. Chocolate malt, caramel malt, black malt, and roasted barley are used in this beer to give it an intricate flavor. The vanilla flavoring is an extract that is added after fermentation that gives the beer yet another layer of taste. Porters are considered to be in-between brown ales and stouts, but Vanilla Porter is right on the edge of a stout.

On tap in a restaurant on Park Ave in Rochester. Pours an amber-brown color with small white head. Nose and flavor are dominated by vanilla - a bit much. Some maltiness with medium body. Just ok.

I've had this on tap at Dinosaur BBQ in Rochester & from growlers. Dark pour with modest white head, noticeable malt & vanilla smell. Very light carbonation, almost like a nitrous carbonated beer. Very smooth mouthfeel, w/ strong maltiness, mild smokiness, & noticeable but not overwhelming vanilla taste. A hint of chocolate, too. A very tasty porter. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

[4179-20111203] Tap. Chocolate cocoa bean malt roast aroma. Clear, black red-hued body with quick foamy off-white head. More chocolate sugary cocoa powder flavour has a nice sweet malt throughout. Medium-full body. Tasty. (8/3/7/3/13) 3.4

On tap at the brewery. I think I would have rather tasted the porter without the vanilla extract. I understand the attraction of such a beer, but unfortunately the vanilla dominates the aroma and the finish - completely disguising, what is a well-bodied and probably flavorful beer.

On tap at the brewpub in Rochester. Poured a dark, opaque brown with minimal head. Vanilla was present in both the smell and taste, but wasn’t overpowering. A bit of chocolate in the flavor as well. Very smooth and silky. I enjoyed it.

Big vanilla notes on the nose as well as the tongue. Pours dark lehigh brown with a minor head. Finishes clean. I think the vanilla is nice for a time but it soon overpowers everything. You couldn’t think of seasoning with this plus the 6.5% doesn’t help.

Had at Tap NY. This is a really interesting combo and it works well. The smokiness of the malts mix nicely with smooth vanilla character. Neither taste really dominates and they go together well. Very good brew.

Presentation: It was poured from tap and served in a pint glass at the Rohrbach brewpub. Appearance: The body has a dark brown, almost black color with a small one finger tan head. The head hangs on well and makes some lacing on the glass as I drink. Smell: In the nose I pick up a nice roasty, toasty character with a pleasant whiff of vanilla. Taste/Palate: On the tongue I pick up the roasted sweetness and toasted semi-bitterness from the malt. There are hints of toasted bread, dark chocolate and coffee with a nice level of sweet vanilla creaminess running through the center. The hops are not much of a noticeable factor but do held with balancing the malt sweetness. The palate is smooth but well carbonated with a solid medium feel. Notes: To me vanilla can be a dangerous thing in a beer. If it’s not done right it can come of as tasting like Vanilla Coke. This beer is done right. It still has enough bitterness and body to remind you that you are drinking a beer. Well Done Rohrbach!!!
