Guinness4Duff (457), Tallahassee (and Poconos, PA), Florida, USA Jun 4, 2008 It is not much of a secret that Anheuser-Busch has been trying for years to break the market stranglehold that Yuengling has over Pennsylvania (particularly in the east), and not too long ago bought out the states second most popular brewery, Rolling Rock. After ruining the flagship beer by moving operations from "the glass lined tanks of old Latrobe" to Newark, NJ (they even ran an ad campaign apologizing for how terrible the beer had become), they now seem set on breaking in with a Yuengling Traditional Lager copycat. Now, one may also say that this is a clear ripoff of Killians Irish Red given that red is in the name and there is a similar horse on the front label. The beer however is not red at all, its a lighter amber much like Yuengling, has the familar grainy aroma with some light caramel and mild toasted notes, but thats where the similarities end. This is much lighter, very thin in the mouth and tastes a bit like rice crispies. Not even close.
Nice try AB, but dont bother releasing this in PA.
ProBeerDrinker (12), , Florida, USA Aug 9, 2008 This would be an upgrade from the Rolling Rock that A.B. puts out now. It has a roasty, caramel, aroma and a medium sweetness, that was quite refreshing. It’s not the best red beer that I have had but it drinks well. hopscotch (4433), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Jul 5, 2008 Bottle... Clear amber lager with a mid-sized, wispy, white head. Decent retention. Sweet, nicely toasted nose... biscuit, cookie and a little cheap perfume. Medium-bodied with fizzy carbonation. Leans on the sweet side of balance. Sweet toffee and restrained bitterness. Lightly acidic. Finishes sweet and grainy. PhillyBeer2112 (1836), Orange Park, Florida, USA Jun 6, 2008 An orangey caramel color, a vigorous pour forces a voluminous foamy head but it fades quickly to a thin layer of bubbles. Lucky this wasn’t skunked from the green bottle. Aroma is mostly bready, a touch grainy, maybe some grassy hops, or a good imagination. Clean sweet doughy malt flavors remind me quite a bit of regular Rolling Rock but this one at least has a fuller body and a touch deeper malt character. pkbites (252), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA May 29, 2008 Wonderful nose of toasted caramel. Pours a pretty light red. Head is a rich, creamy, off white color. That’s where the good stuff ends. First, the head vanishes immediately. Second, this beer tastes very watered down. The malt is tasted, but it’s flavor is diminished by a gallon of water. Mouth feel is like a light beer. Very disapointing. This would probably be a very good brew if it wasn’t so watered down. For shame, Rolling Rock, for shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
