COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The city and province of Utrecht has got a great history (and future) of brewing beer. It deserves a beer that shows our appreciation and what more could we do than make this Utrecht Strong Ale. Big hops dominate the aroma and big malts support them in taste. Put your hands up for Utrecht, we love that city!

Bottle, courtesy of skortila. Ruby reddish - brown colour, tan head. Nose is hoppy, fruity and floral, oranges, biscuit malts. Fairly bitter. Flavour is biscuit malty, caramel, slight toastiness, fairly bitter. Barleywine-esque minus the sweetness. Really good stuff.

Bottle. Murky golden brown, off white head that recedes to little foamy islands. Aroma is sweetly malty with ripe stone fruit. A mixed bag of sweet malty and yeasty traits, including fruity caramel, light chocolate, and a bit of bread. The hops here are soft and peachy, maybe a bit of ripe mango too, but nothing stands out amongst the malt dominance. Enjoyable but a bit muddled.

330ml bottle (BierKompass.de)
Super spicy aroma, pure rye it’s so spicy. Full palate, carbonation lowish, which makes the sweetness a bit slick. Big full malty taste, a little mashy too, but not raw, tons of bitter hops too. Quite heavy, but because of the heavy sweetness smothering the alcohol it’s not boozy. Too sweet for me, but certainly very tasty in its own way.

330ml bottle (shared by FatPhil, thanks). Murky brown color. Chunky, moldy head, stays. Sweet, fruity, candy, spicy, bit of ginger in aroma. Sweet, candy, roast, hops, malty taste. Sweet body. Malty aftertaste. Nice one.

Een bier met een heel lekkere geur, maar de smaak is daarentegen enorm slecht vind ik.

Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 19B adapted). Bottle 33 cl - Batch unknown - Bottled on 30-OCT-2012. AROMA: very rich and sweet malt aroma with dried fruits and caramel notes. smooth vinous and port like alcohol notes. low hop aromas and no diacetyl. some cardboard aroma is present. APPEARANCE: deep Brown color and almost opaque. good moussy light brown head with good retention. some viscosity derived from alcohol without pronunced "legging" TASTE: very nice range of sweet malt flavours (toasted, caramel, toffe) and some dried fruits (dried figs). balanced bitterness lingering into a medium-dry finish. very low hop flavours. faint presence of alcohol flavours. PALATE: medium smooth body with medium-low carbonation. faint alcohol warmth. OVERALL: a good strong and barleywine-like ale with good aromas and a plethora of malt flavours.

Bottle at home. Pours dark amber with a tiny off-white head. Caramel nose, rose water, white peach and light grapefruit. Balanced body, nice hop profile (this is more of a double IPA than a strong ale imo) and a nice medium dry bitterness. Taste is smoky leather, tangerine and some cabbage. Nice beer.
