On tap for growler fills at Half Time. Pours a deep brown with a thin to medium sized beige head. Malty toast, malt and crisp toast notes. Medium bodied, smooth, nutty malt, toast. Smooth, with a crisp bitterness, toast. Nice and balanced.

Sampled on tap at the brewpub
Pours a cloudy dark brown color with a thinnish tan head that dissipates quickly. Smells of roasted malts and coffee. Slightly nutty and earthy. Smells like this is going to be darker than a nut brown ale. Taste is roasted coffee, chocolate, nutty, earthy, malty. Finishes a bit on the dry side with a long lingering roasted grain. Very tasty, but almost porter or stout like with a lot of roasted grain going on here. Medium to thin body and level of carbonation. I really enjoyed this beer, but again its hard to call it a nut brown.

On tap at the Crooked Rooster Pub. Dark black pour with a tan head. Aroma is very roasty and slightly nutty with some sweet malts. Flavor is bitter and sweet at the beginning with a roasted malt middle and a bitter malt finish.

On tap at Tully’s in Amherst, NY. Very intriguing beer. Has the smell of a nut brown with the hazelnut, but also has some chocolate and caramel notes. Beer has the look of a stout, like a standard Guinness, only with a lighter-colored brown body. Still opaque though. Flavor has a ton of caramel, very sweet although somewhat dry finish. Had the creamy body of a stout but the taste of a sweet nut brown. Not bad.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 fiulijn (12179) - Malmö, DENMARK - DEC 18, 2009
Draught at Barcade, New York Dark brown color. It has a quite good aroma combination: balanced chocolate, hop, caramel. The flavor is too dry, with strong chocolate and strong bitterness. Too much roasted malts at the end. Not for me.

Tap at Barcade for the 5th Anniversary Party. A new NY brewer? This was the first I’d heard of them. Mildly hoppy, clean, nutty aroma. Brazen and bold. Full flavor, medium bodied, roast and carbonic acid. Kind of fishy. A better than average brown. I’ll be looking for more from these guys.

Draft from Waterfront AH manhattan. Poured dark with mild head. Sweet and brown. Right on, more like a porter than an ale.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 blipp (4784) - Newark, New Jersey, USA - JUN 21, 2009
Growler filled at Consumers in Niagara Falls. Deep ruby brown with a beige head. The aroma is sweet and roasty, with chocolate, hazelnut and a hint of smoke. The flavor starts sweet and roasty, with a smoky side that gets stronger as the beer warms. Lighter notes of chocolate and hazelnuts. Very good. Really more like a lightly smoked porter than a brown ale, but if you want to call it a brown ale, it’s a damn good one.

The fact that this is a nut brown says it all to me. yes, like others have said, this comes off almost as a porter, it’s thick, it’s rich, it’s got a nuts roasted in chocolate taste with a very smooth finish. You’ll have to like dark beer to appreciate this nutty brown ale.
