Cloudy/murky with a very evident maltiness which is heavy on the munich malt. Very enjoyable beer falls squarely in the ’sweet dunkle’ style that is brewed in the Franconia region. Very nice beer that is somewhat sessionable. If you’re in the Bamberg area you should stop by the brewery...

My Bottom Line :
Lightly toasted malts are accompanied by orange-y fruitiness and earthy hops in this levelled quencher.

Further Personal Perceptions :
-A creamy head of foam covers the misty amber.
-This is yet another pillowy mouthfeel from Sauer; so comfortable and so drinkable, while avoiding watery thinness.
-Yeast flavors accompany the hops in the finish.
-The fruitiness brings tart edges as well; I’m not sure if this is wanted or not, but it is harmonious with the rest of the flavor profile.

On tap at the brewery gasthof.

Bottle: Chestnut-amber coloured, smaller - lacy - off-white head, a bit hazy; light to moderate caramelly nose, fruity and hoppy aromas around; light to moderate sweet-bitter flavour, soft MF; light caramelly-sweetish finish, balanced by a light hoppiness in the aftertaste. Good franconian quality......

Tap @ Rossdorf Am Forst. Pours amber copper with a creamy head. Dark fruit, bread, caramel and toffee. Smooth and full bodied. Lots of dark fruit. Ok enjoyable.

The color is like liquid red amber – very beautiful with a huge and creamy head. The aroma has notes of malt and loads of caramel and light fruit. The flavor has a light to moderate sweetness and it is quite full and smooth with nice malty notes of caramel, light fruits and the finish is slightly dry. Very pleasant to drink.

bottle from Münchberg. Clear brown colour, large off-white head. Woody-sourish nose. Medium-bodied, hints of chocolate and cocoa with woody and slightly fruity hopp flavours.

(bottle) Hazy, amber to copper colour with a big and beige foamy head. Sweet and yeasty fruity cara-malty aroma with notes of apricots and citrus, accompanied by a tinge of herbal hops. Moderately sweet flavour, light bodied with a soft carbonation. Cara-malty taste with fruity and yeasty notes; bitter-sweet caramelly and fairly hoppy finish. Likeable Franconian Halbdunkles/Kellerbier, just a tad too slim. 21.XI.10

Flasche (50 cl) von Hopfen & Malz, Berlin. - Dunkler, rötlicher Bernsteinton, trüb. - In der Nase Karamel, Hefe und milde Frucht. Antrunk mild hefig, verhalten fruchtig (Apfel), gerstig, schwach karamellig, kaum süß. ========================== Despite its somewhat misleading name, this beer is no Dunkel (dunkel means "dark“ in German, which this beer is not) but an Amber Lager/Vienna. As it is unfiltered, it could also be included in the Zwickel/Keller/Landbier category, depending on which characteristic takes precedence in the rater’s eye. But definitely no Dunkel.
