To come up with a name for our Zäpfle bottle version of our Märzen Export, we went back to the history of this variety of beer.

Before refrigerators and ice machines existed, the last batches of bottom-fermented beer could only be brewed in March (März) at the latest. It was then cooled with naturally forming ice. To harvest the ice, two processes were commonly implemented. Large blocks of ice were frequently cut from the ice sheets of ponds that were frozen over. They were then stored in the cellars of breweries. The second process is what gave Eiszäpfle (or icicle in English) its name. Large wooden scaffolding was sprayed with water so that icicles would form on the beams. These could then be knocked off and used to cool the beer.

Our Märzen Export also used to be cooled in this way. Today we commemorate this laborious process with the name Eiszäpfle. The name, however, is also intended to inspire a thirst in summer months for this refreshing and aromatic Märzen Export beer, as well as provide comforting pleasure in winter when the icicles hang down outside from the edges of roofs.

Had it as Rothaus Märzen (bottle). Golden color with a nice frothy white head. Aroma of bread, fresh grains, a bit grassy. Taste is malty-sweet with some nice bitter/hoppy note. One of the best beer I ever had, how could it have only 37 as rating???

Bottle. Strong grassy hops and light caramel malt aroma. Golden yellow color with small but persistent head. Caramel malt and grass/hay hops flavor. Nicely blended. A spectacular festbier - head and shoulders above other Märzens.

as Marzen. Very golden colour with a fluffy head. Incredibly grassy and floral. Went down well with the wild cheese I had with this. Love this brewery!

Bottle brought from Darmstadt to me by my lovely wife, thanks Xana. Pours golden, which puts it in the modern category of Märzen, unfortunately. Had hoped for a more traditional type. The head is foamy and stays. The aroma is fresh of grains, very nice. The taste is full, malty and grainy, double decoction brewing? It’s a heavy beer, but very tasty and good backing from the hops in the aftertaste. A bit too carbonated for my taste but a lovely beer.

Guter Stoff! Test vom 22.4.2008, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 12,10,12,13,13,12 - 11,90

Good example of a Southern German export marzen. Lots of sweet malt in the aroma and taste, deep golden colour and a hoppy finish that manifests itself after youve drained the glass making you wish you had another bottle in the fridge. Nice label.

500ml bottle at The Rake, 2nd Dec 08 with tashi. Clear amber with a persistent white head. Very strong grain aroma. Definite signature Rothaus aroma and flavour. A simple style done well. Very refreshing and good if you find the Rothaus lager too light.

Yes, it tastes! I also like the packaging! 0.33 l is exactly right! Sweet, but also a bissel tart! Hat was!
