COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This brew was inspired by the historical burning of our hometown of Chambersburg, PA in 1864 shortly before the Battle of Gettysburg. During the burning, the brewery in town, "Ludwigs Brewery" was burned to the ground by Confederate soldiers. In remembrance of this event we created a German style rauchbier, or dark smoked lager. This beer uses all its ingredients from Bamberg, Germany, which is where the style was born and in by coincidence, the same area where Ludwig himself was born and taught to brew. It is made with a special birch wood smoked malt that imparts a light smoky aroma, taste, and dryness to the palate. The pilsner malt and noble German hops are used to balance this dryness making it very enjoyable as well as different. We believe this beer resembles how Ludwig himself might have brewed it over 100 years ago.

From growler, courtesy of TVD. Nice sweet smoky aroma, with chocolate, coffee, and night smoked malt aromas - not meaty. Dark black body with thin off-white head. Medium body with medium carbonation. Starts sweet with molasses, chocolate, and coffee. Nice smoky presence but not overly aggressive; mellow smokiness. Finish is light bitter with sweet-smoky notes. Smooth light smoky sweet after.

Transfer from BA review on 4-15-12 - \ Served in a pint glass Appearance – Served a deep brown-nearly black color with a medium off white head. The head faded to leave a moderate amount of lacing. Smell – Roasty malt aromas are heaviest and are mixed with some smoke. There are also some hints of sweet chocolate mixed in the nose that meld well with the smoke and roast. Taste- The taste starts out a bit on the more roasty malt side. Some hints of chocolate are also present initially. The sweeter chocolate fades over time with a smoky flavor that takes its place. At the very end a very light bitter coffee flavor comes into the flavor, giving a slightly more bitter smoky chocolate flavor on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body is a bit on the creamier and thicker side with a medium level of carbonation. Rather appropriate for the smoky chocolaty flavor. Overall – A nice easy to drink brew. One that is well worth trying.

Bottle courtesy of Braudog. Black pour with a short tan head. Aroma is roasty and slightly smoky/ashy with soft coffee notes. Taste is roasted malt, ash, light yogurt and coffee. This tastes more like a milk stout to me. Slightly lactic throughout once it hits the tongue. Body is light-medium with a soft, creamy carbonation. Slight tartness as well. Guess it’s possible this just didn’t hold up despite being in the fridge since I got it. Ends with more roasted malt, yogurt notes, light coffee and soft ashiness.

Bottle. Deep and black, with the visuals of a thick, creamy brew. This drinks with an ashy, smokiness, but still is predominately a sweet, malty brew at its base. I love the name and history behind this beer and give it extra points just for that. And to be fair, it delivers what’s promised ... a "light smoky aroma" balanced with a pilsner malt. Well done, if not assertive enough to land amonst the classical rauchbier styles. (#4725, 8/9/2012)
