A charred malt aroma with a strong caramel presence and hints of star fruit. The taste begins semi-sweet but is then covered up by a nice balancing of hop bitterness on the finish, the bitterness is stronger than the the semi-sweet, but in a very good way. Medium body and light carbonation, but still "mouth filling." The color was a barely translucent brownish copper. A very good beer overall, could compete with the Sierra Nevada "Tumbler" and Stone’s "Oaked arrogant bastard."

Draft pint at the brewpub. Reddish-amber beer. Decent malty beer, with a moderate hop finish. Textbook American brewpub ESB -- sessionable to be sure. (#3830, 1/28/2010)

This beer’s decent bitter and malty combo makes it a nice competitor for ROB’s IPA. Between the two beers, I usually remained satisfied during weekly visits to the ROB.

Tap. Deep golden brown color with a fluffy off-white head. Soft malty aroma. Medium earthy malts flavors from start to middle. Finishes with a nice hop balance. A sweetness from the malts emerges in the aftertaste after about half a pint. Smooth medium-thin body.

On tap at the Royal Oak Brew Pub. Poured a medium to deeper orange color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of caramel and somewhat floral. Tastes of caramel, orange peel, and citrus. Nice lacing left on the glass.

Tap: amber with little head. Only aroma I could pick up was smoke. Flavor a little strange also, decent malt/hop balance but had the same smoky tatse to it.

Tap. Pours a reddish amber color with a slight off-white head. Some lacing. Aroma is a bit funky, malt and hop with another strange addition. Can’t really place it. Light to medium bodied. Decent malt flavors up front and a good hop bitterness for balance. Strange aroma doesn’t seem to show up in flavor. Nice ESB.

Medium deep amber served to me with hardly any head, and what was there didn’t hang around for very long. Transparent and obviously filtered. Aroma was that of caramel malts, grapefruit common to hops, and brown sugar. Flavor was candy sweet with the caramel presenting itself well, slight bitterness at the finish. Overall a light example that could have used a stronger hop flavor with a better balance to the sweet malts.
