3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 thetmaxx (673) - West Sacramento, California, USA - OCT 24, 2011
Poured from the bottle into a shaker. Aroma is of hops, citrus hops. Flavor takes the "dark side"of this black ipa on that it is almost pure roast flavors, coffee, somebitterness. Overall well balance with the roast and hops. Really really good example of a black ipa.

Bottle from K&B. Deep brown, almost black with a creamy beige head that left behind some nice lacing. Nice piny hop nose with a good amount of roasted malts in the for and back ground. Roasty on the palate with lite - medium hop bitterness in the finish.
2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 BMan1113VR (7420) - Los Angeles, California, USA - JAN 2, 2011
Bottle. Pours with a roasty black body and a thick light brown, creamy head. Good lace left on the glass. Aromas of pine, citrus (orange essence), baked bread, roast, coffee grounds, espresso. Maybe a bit too much roast (We will see). Flavor is at first, big, acrid, roasty, acidic roasted malts. Next sip still has the acidic and acrid character but adds some roast and bitterness (maybe some citrus hops). Final impression is still outwardly acidic dark roast. Really acrid. Light citrus character. Oppressive bitterness which is mainly from the roast. Not super pleasant. Medium bubbles. Roasty finish. Not my favorite beer of this style by a long shot. At this point its kind of a mess.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 DYCSoccer17 (3041) - Woodland, California, USA - JAN 2, 2011
16 ounce sample on tap at the brewpub. Roasted chocolate notes in the nose is predominant. Some grapefruity "C" hops are also present in the background. Lightly sweet. Moderately transparent dark dark mahogany body with garnet hues. Small light tan head. Starts a little citrus before there are scant Simcoe hop hemp notes. This then becomes super roasty and burnt in the middle. Finishes with very bitter burnt grapefruit hop flavors. A little harsh with the burnt flavors. The burnt malt character dominates the hop profile, which basically makes this more of a hoppy porter than a Black IPA. This is full-bodied.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 marcus (5098) - Sacramento, California, USA - DEC 28, 2010
Bottle from Corti Bros. Pours jet black with a rich tan head and a citrus and treacle aroma. There is a complex flavor with elements of molasses, nutty dark malt and a piny hop finish. Interesting and tasty.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 bhensonb (9093) - Woodland, California, USA - OCT 13, 2007
Draft at the brewpub. Nice hoppy aroma - seems resiny. Opaque blackish color with a decent dark tan head. The flavor is bright hop - kiwi -citrus - pine. Maybe it is mostly citrus? Definitely not grapefruit. The afterflavor seems kiwi, almost strawberry. The malt is very darkly toasted. There is a light sweetness, but the finish is dry, and that fruity, hoppy bitter carries on and on. Thre’s flat lacing as the glass empties. After awhile that old Guinness toast flavor accumulates to offset the hop a bit. The flavors shift with time. My tongue was strongly stimulated on the top service. Wonderful stuff.
