timfoolery (361), California, USA Jul 16, 2008 10 ounce sample at Rubicon in Sac. Served in a snifer, which highlighted the distinct grapefruit (juicy, at that) scents. The taste was similar with some floral notes. Smooth to start, hop hit in the middle, and a bitter finish. Not great on the palate later on, but it was a very good brew overall. It definitely gets close to the best of the genre for me.
bb (2168), Martinez, California, USA Oct 4, 2008 Draft. Rich amber with a low off-white head. Grapefruit, pine, and sweet caramel malt. Grapefruit, pine tar, and caramel flavor with good bitterness. Not as sweet as I’d have thought from reading the reviews. Medium body. Lingering pine resin and grapefruit with sweet caramel. hapjydeuce (581), Carlsbad, California, USA Sep 10, 2008 On tap at O’Briens. Backlogged rating. Pours a dark orange with a medium one-finger white head that settles to a fine ring. Pine needle aroma with firm malted barley behind. The flavor leans quite sweet and malty, with a dry-hopped bitterness smashing the palate quickly towards the end of each sip. A good amount of carbonation gives a medium crispness to the finish, taking the edge off the sweet malts. Tasty! doubleo (842), San Diego, California, USA Aug 20, 2008 On-tap at O’Briens. Pours hazy amber with a thin white head, good lace. Smells hoppy and very fruity sweet. Slight plastic smell as well. Tastes is very sweet and lemony hoppy. The sweetness lingers. Very nice flavor. Surprisingly thin, medium body, good carbonation. SuzyGreenberg (1043), Seattle, Washington, USA Jul 31, 2008 draft @ brewery - served in a goblet; clear, glowing orange and thin, white head fades quickly; syrupy, sweet and juicy hop aromas; huge nose on this one; sweetness smooths out the bitterness as the flavors never quite match the aromas; dry and bitter finish; seems to hold it together well despite all the hop varieties for a very tasty double IPA Taverner (485), San Ramon, California, USA Jul 22, 2008 Pours amber with minimal head. Lots of piney resinous florals, but also way too much sugar. This would be EXCELLENT as a drier IPA. With the sweetness it seems more like a Barleywine than an IPA.
