Golden in color with an assertive hop bitterness. This beer won gold medals at The Great American Beer Festival in 1989 and 1990. A true American Classic.

Lightish body. Perfume. Some acidity. Snappy, sharp hops. Off-flavors of solvent and medicine, which careened into the aftertaste. Not undrinkable by any means, but I was underwhelmed and expected more.

Bottle. Poured a coppery red color, with a small, half finger of head. Lacking is okay, but the carbonation is better than I would have though with such a weak head. Nose is a sweet citrus and fruits, with hints of hops buried in there. This one really surprised me, as it tastes like grapefruit juice, with a bitter citrus finish, but nothing hoppy in the traditional sense of an IPA. Very different, and pretty good. Very easy to drink for those unaccustomed to the world of IPAs, but I personally do not think this is very representative of the style.

Bottle. Pours copper with moderate off-white head, with some lacing. Nose is syrupy caramel or toffee with berries and orange citrus-like hops. Flavor is strongly fruity hops upfront and the slightest toasted malt taste. Very bitter, almost astringent finish. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, but maybe just a little thin.

Strong floral hoppy aroma. Delicious fruity taste, not too hoppy for an IPA. Some other complex notes on the taste that I can’t quite name.

Clear lighter amber, moderate head with pretty good lacing and retention. Aroma is citric, wood, grapefruit. Medium bodied, moderate to low bitterness, some sweetness. Overall nothing special but still drinkable. ABV listed at 6.5.

A pleasant surprise. Pours orangy-gold with a frothy white head. Clean pine hop aroma, with some citrus, a la the west coast style. Great taste of grapefruit and oranges. Bit of bread in the back. Dry finish. Nice.

22 oz. bottle, from BevMo LaJolla. Finally getting to rate this one, had it on draft a few months ago but lost my ratings book! Pours medium amber with a slight chill haze and a large, fluffy off-white head that lingers nicely. Aroma is hop dominant with sufficient, toasty and slightly caramel malt notes, hops are pine resin, citrus with just a hint of something vegetal and spoiling. Flavor is also hop dominant, certainly fulfilling the commercial deScription claim of "assertive hop bitterness", more pine and grapefruit rind, along with a somewhat biscuity and toasty malt character, honey and orange make brief appearances leading up to a puckering and astringent evergreen oil aftertaste. Medium body and assertive carbonation. Another nice example of an in your face West Coast IPA!

22 oz in a half yard - it pours a clear amber throughout. It tastes a bit more like an ESB than an IPA. The hops are bright and fresh - and its a pretty citrusey IPA.

22 oz bomber purchased at South Bay Drugs. This IPA poured as a sparkling brass color with a thin layer of film for a head. The aroma is a decent serving of west coast hops in the citrus style you could expect, accept, this was tamer and subdued. The drink was a warm alcohol and tart bitter hop flavor presence which made for an unusual drink that I’m used to but overall decent and making a passing grade for a standard IPA.

The glow from within the glass is bright even though the liquid is very cloudy. The body is deep orange, the slowly receding head is creamy and light beige. The aroma is evident from afar, fresh hops billowing from the glass. Grapefruit is the prominent characteristic, folowed by pine needles, earth, lightly toasted grains aplenty and miniscule amounts of alcohol and sugars. this aroma is very one-dimensional, but unified and flawless thus far. The flavor is moderately bittewr, very lightly astringent, mildly sweet, doughy, tangibly resinous and very drinkable. The flavor is all forward, with little on the backside but light, airy bitterness. The finish is dry, medium bitterness lingering for a short while, eventually giving way to grains. The mouthfeel is a little shy of adequately carbonated but it’s fizzy. A light-medium to medium body is sticky and progresses slowly across the palate. Solid, a good session beer that is somewhat refreshing, also far from extraordinary.
