First brewed in 1995 on the day Jerry Garcia Died, and is named after one of his guitars. This complex multi grain ale is made with a blend of ten types of malted barley. A: The pour is a clear, dark amber color with a small off-white head, leaving some mild lacing. S: A lot of sweet caramel malt along with some brown sugar. A mild citrus aroma helps to cut through the sweetness. T: Despite a very sugary nose, the sweetness was fairly restrained. The caramel and brown sugar come through, but so do some nice citrus and fruit flavors. The hops don’t really provide any bitterness here, which I could have used a touch of. M: The body is medium to full with a moderate level of carbonation. D: A touch more bitterness and this one would have been a lot better. It was still good as it is, but seemed to be missing something.

Tap. Pours clear dark amber with a medium, frothy tan head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is caramel and cookie malt, sweet candied dry fruit, and dank hops. Flavor is malt dominant with medium hops and bitterness, dried fruity esters and a sweet finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Bottle… Most beautiful, clear, rose-tinged copper ale I’ve ever seen. Wow! It bears a relatively small, creamy, khaki head. Pretty good retention. The nose is of sweet maple syrup and brown sugar flanked by a mild citrus fruit component. Full-bodied and chewy with laid-back carbonation. The flavor is harshly bitter and it’s not of the pleasant variety – metallic lupulin sears the rear of my mouth, palate and the sides of my tongue. I can’t determine whether it’s the heat from the hops or the heat from alcohol, but there’s a boozy feel here. Finishes acutely bitter and hot with a lingering medicinal, cough syrup aftertaste.

Tap at Beachwood. Pours with a hazy auburn body and a light brown head that stays and leaves good lacing. Aroma of dark fruits, tons and tons of malt, and some melon aromas with hops (reminds me of Ale to the Chief). Taste is malty and a bit nutty with dark fruits and light spicey hops. Syrupy mouthfeel and light carbonation

22oz bomber pours amber with a quarter inch tan head of foam. The aroma has a bit of roasted malts and malt earthiness and then some mild spicy to floral to earthy hop notes. The taste is pretty rich with modestly roasted malts and then a mix of spicy hops, earthy hops and a mineral note. To midway the roasted malts grow a bit and pick up a sliver of floral hops into the finish. This has big flavor that comes together pretty darn well.

Draft. Bronze beer with a light tan head. Light pine aroma with light toasty malt. Light grapefruit/pine flavor with toasted and caramel malts. Medium bodied. Piney/earthiness lingers with some light caramel.

Pours dark brown with a thick tna head and a toffee aroma. There is a complex nutty dark malt flavor that reflects characteristics of the various grains used. Theextensive hopping produces a dry bitter finish.
