COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First brewed at the Rubicon in December 1988. This wonderful ale was inspired by the late Jim Pell. While attempting a batch of home brew he came up with a summer wheat ale that was over 10% abv WHEW! This was a big mistake for him, but one we are proud to continue for your enjoyment. Gold Medal winner Great American Beer Festival 2006.

From tap at Beachwood BBQ. Pours hazy dark amber with a small tan and creamy head. Aroma is wheat, fruity and phenolic. Smooth fruity, solid hoppy and dark toasted malty. Bitter and dry malty into a slight hot finish.

UPDATED: APR 5, 2006 Bottled. Clear pale brown. Very obvious pancake syrup aroma. Extremely sweet and syrupy - more like an American pancake mix with the syrup already included. Way, way too sweet. It’s not even near the levels where my tastebuds starts perceiving anything but sweetness.

Some of the other people at the tasting really hated this one. I may have had a different bottle, though, as there were several floating around. Bright dark amber colour. The aroma is a bit syrupy with artificial blueberry accents (ew). Very rich, massive malts and a bit of backing alcohol. So syrupy and warming, if a bit one-dimensional. I’d expect it to age well, though.

11th October 2008. GABF. This version a lighter 10.5% abv! Clear dark amber beer. Sweet aromatic barleywine. Just a little hop in the finish.

Draft at the brewpub. Strong malt/brown sugar aroma. Near opaque darkish, brownish amber color with a yellow-white ring for head. Full in body, a bit zesty in carbonation that turns creamy. Flavor is brown sugary sweet, with fruity notes- like kiwi/strawberry. Some heat is noticeable, but it doesn’t detract from the flavors. Finish seems to develop some hoppy bitter. Wheat? Dunno. It’s really good stuff, wheat or not.

GABF 2008 poured a clear golden amber with a lingering ring of amber foam. Aromas of wheat, carmel, fruittiness and peppere. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of wheat, carmel, fruittiness, toffee and light spice with a smooth warming fruity finish.

GABF 2009. Pours clear amber with a small, fizzy white head, mostly diminishing with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (bread, caramel, toasted grain), light hop (herbs), average yeast (dough) with notes of date, apple, pear, and brown sugar. Full bodied, creamy texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, heavy sweetness, moderate acidity and bitterness.

On tap at the 2007 GABF: Clear copper bronze with a dense creamy light tan head. Rich, sweet caramely wheaty aroma has some light fruity esters. Body starts with a rich sweet wheaty flavor and some doughy caramel and light fruity complexity with plenty of warming alcohol toward the finish. Needs to hide the abv better, but still pretty good.
