Brewed for Union Jacks. Formerly Legacy Hoptimus Prime. Aggressively formulated with five different hop varieties, Hoptimus Prime is then dry hopped for two weeks, ensuring a MASSIVE hop flavor and aroma. Perfectly balanced with three types of malt, Hoptimus Prime is truly the pinnacle of hop flavor. This Double IPA pairs fantastically with spicy Thai food, Mexican cuisine, or a big ol’ bowl of chili.

Draft at Capones. Pours a deep amber with a dissipating white head. Aroma of piney and spicy hops. Initial flavor of toffee and caramel malts that is zapped by a sharp bitterness. Bitterness carries through to the semi dry finish, with notes of grapefruit rind. Enjoyable beer, but lacks some complexity in the hop profile for me.

On tap at Union Jacks Hoffmansville Road. The alcohol taste at the end kills this one for me. Good aroma. Lots of pine and only a little bit of citrus. I’d prefer more citrus and less alcohol taste. Very biitter.

had this at cobblestones in york, a nice sweet IPA, fairly good body, had a slight alchol finish to it, which threw it off for me.

UPDATED: MAR 24, 2008 22 oz. bottle consumed 3/23/2008. Usually, I enjoy the draft version of a beer better than the bottle version. Not so in this case. Pours a brilliant clear gold with a moderate white head that quickly disappeared. Very nice aroma of citrus and pine. The flavor is bitter grapefruit with pine, but with very little malt backbone to support it. The bitterness lingers beyond the swallow.

Original Rating 10/29/2007. Sampled at GWBF 2007. The name of this beer reminds me of a planet’s name on Star Trek. "Take us into orbit above Hoptimus Prime, Mr. Data." Pours a clear gold with an off-white head. Lots of pine in the aroma. Pine is also the dominant flavor quality with a little fruitiness noted as well. Very, very bitter - bordering on acrid. The bitterness lingers well after the swallow. 8-3-8-2-13=3.4

Sample at the Hop Devil Grill with golubj. Flavor was very hoppy, but not with a very good flavor. A little one dimensional, lacking a great balance between the malt and hops. Not all that great.

Draft at Hop Devil Grill. Aroma of malt, a little citrus, a lot of pine / grassy hops. The flavor was real similar, malt and lots of pine / grassy hops. Pretty high level of bitterness, but not my favorite hop profile.

Pint at Zeno’s. Color is yellow amber, sitting about 20% opaque. Nose is intensely grassy and dry, with some heavy notes of muddy, earthy yeast. Heavy and rich on the tongue up front, then quickly drying, with some creamed orange and melon flavors, and some dry ashy notes in the the long-lasting, dry and parches and scathing finish. Over time it starts to develop some burng olive and peanut oil notes, and the hops are so mangled and seem so thrown togethor, it just doesn’t come togethor as anything desirable. Messy, hugely hoppy but unclean and unpolished, aggressive when it needs not to be, and it relies entirely on high bitterness and not on any flavors that could have been extracted from the hops.

On draft at Union Jack’s, Manayunk. Poured clear orange with white head that left very nice lacing. Very complex; starts extremely fruity and finished bitter. A pleasant surprise.
