COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed for Union Jacks. Formerly Legacy Hoptimus Prime. Aggressively formulated with five different hop varieties, Hoptimus Prime is then dry hopped for two weeks, ensuring a MASSIVE hop flavor and aroma. Perfectly balanced with three types of malt, Hoptimus Prime is truly the pinnacle of hop flavor. This Double IPA pairs fantastically with spicy Thai food, Mexican cuisine, or a big ol’ bowl of chili.

Draft at Hop Devil Grill. Aroma of malt, a little citrus, a lot of pine / grassy hops. The flavor was real similar, malt and lots of pine / grassy hops. Pretty high level of bitterness, but not my favorite hop profile.

Pint at Zeno’s. Color is yellow amber, sitting about 20% opaque. Nose is intensely grassy and dry, with some heavy notes of muddy, earthy yeast. Heavy and rich on the tongue up front, then quickly drying, with some creamed orange and melon flavors, and some dry ashy notes in the the long-lasting, dry and parches and scathing finish. Over time it starts to develop some burng olive and peanut oil notes, and the hops are so mangled and seem so thrown togethor, it just doesn’t come togethor as anything desirable. Messy, hugely hoppy but unclean and unpolished, aggressive when it needs not to be, and it relies entirely on high bitterness and not on any flavors that could have been extracted from the hops.

UPDATED: FEB 10, 2008 On draft at Zeno’s. Pours a sandy brown orange with a medium white head. aroma of grapefruit, orange citrus, and piney hops. Taste is bitter hoppy with hints of grapefruit, orange and pine. Excellent. (8/4/8/4/16=4.0) 2/10/08 RERATE 22 oz bomber. Pours a clear golden orange with a medium sized white head. Aroma of grapefruit, grassy tones anh hops. Taste is very hoppy with a strong grapefruit presence. Had this a few months back on tap and enjoyed it much more than in bottle form.

On draft at Union Jack’s, Manayunk. Poured clear orange with white head that left very nice lacing. Very complex; starts extremely fruity and finished bitter. A pleasant surprise.

Draft at Which Brew. Cloudy orange body with nice head. Aroma is of citrus, piney. Flavor is very smooth with a nice citrus bite, subtle sweet malt. The flavor was not huge but enough to give it a nice little kick. Probably the best Legacy beer I ever had.

Double IPA my foot. This product as I experienced it has more in common with an APA- weak and underwhelming in every regard. Alcohol is practically undetectable. $7/ 12 oz draft.

Draft, Baja Bean, Staunton VA. Orange with offwhite head. Big hoppy nose of pine and grapefruit. Flavor is thick, chewy hops, again pine and grapefruit, but nicely balanced, with a chalky malt sweetness throughout. Definitely a heavy hitter, a really nice big beer.

Snifter at Union Jack’s in Glenside. Deep, shiny metallic gold body with a clean, uniform white head. Aroma and flavor of grapefruit, light cattiness, and a crisp toasted malt edge. Lightly sweet with medium-high bitterness and a tea-like palate. A fair IPA, but not something I would go clamoring back for.

UPDATED: APR 28, 2008 At Union Jack’s in Glenside, PA. Deep, clear gold with a beige head. Grapefruit rind and caramel, some resin. Very dry and bitter grapefruit flavors over a mild caramel. Nice! Re-rate, 28APR08 - bomber. Clear gold, big beige head. Excellent lace - looks like actual lace. Or something. Flavor is as noted above, very drinkable, hard to believe this is 9%. Good drinker.
