2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 tombyars (1204) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - FEB 29, 2012
First tasted this in the Three Judges, Glasgow in December 1994. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear pale garnet red in colour with a thin white head. A hint of berry fruit in the short aroma. Thin resiny mouthfeel and good lacing. Pale malts give a digestive biscuit base with sweet raisin fruit present. Spicy hop resins give a dry herbal flavour to the bitter aftertaste. Finish is malty with sweet glycerine fruit and burnt candy floss evident. A decent session ESB and well recommended.

Cask@Pigs Ear Beer Festival 2011. Copper colour, small off-white head. Aroma is fruits, mild floral and nectary notes along with some bitter grassy and caramel malty notes. Flavour is similar in a nice balance. Not very much Xmas in this beer, which is a good example of a quite tasty ESB.

Cask (handpump) at the Market Porter on 4 December 2010. Bright copper colour. A little caramel on the nose and palate. Some fruit. Touch of sweetness tempered by a moderate, tangy hop presence. A very decent strong-ish bitter, although I’m not sure what makes it specifically a Christmas beer (except the time when it’s available of course).

Cask at the market porter. Alround rating: Pale and chcolate malt, floral ghops seem a bit out of place, bitter finish.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 harrisoni (10911) - Ashford, Kent, ENGLAND - JAN 2, 2009
Cask handpull at Market Porter. Attractive chestnut colour, with a lasting beige head. It’s a pretty good bitter, I tend to like the Rudgate beers and this is another of them.

(Cask-conditioned at Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Dark copper, small white head. Butter and toffee in aroma with a small accent of Golding hops. Buttery flavour, hints of rasted malt, toffee and fresh grassy hops. A bit unclean finish of the butter again.
