Bottle, bought from Yorks’ Evil Eye Lounge. Pours dark brown. Taste and aroma of dark chocolate, roasted malts, and a touch of coffee. Dry, and quite thin-bodied. We drank it with venison steaks - a really good match.

Cask @ Haymarket, Edinburgh [200312]
Very dark brown, ruby red edges on glass, thin tan head, good lacing
Aroma of soft roasted malts, hint of chocolate, bit of coffee
Taste as aroma, dark malts, soft roast, some mocha coffee, only hint of chocolate
Palate - Medium body, good mouthfeel. Finish has some soft bitter coffee.
Overall - Not getting much chocolate, still a fairly good stout. Best named just ’York Stout’

Bottle. Very dark brown with little head. Aromas are earthy coffee with blackberry and medicinal, herbal notes. Smoky with some dark chocolate. Flavours are roast malts with cola and dark chocolate bitterness. Nutty with some citrus bitterness and a dry finish. Subtle chocolate, overall but a decent dry stout.

Bottle from ASDA Harrogate. Black body. Mid tan medium head. Roast nose, oats, tiniest *hint*of chocolate. Maybe a smidgen of chocolate malt. Bitter. Very dry finish. My suspicion is that this is an accountant’s beer, as I can’t imagine a relatively good brewer like Rudgate messing up so badly. If this had just been labelled "stout", then fine. But when this is labelled "Chocolate Stout", it is very disappointing to get so little chocolate.

rauchbier (3633) - Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND - DEC 13, 2012
Bottle, from Asda Hull. Jet black, thin but lasting off white head and moderate condition. Initial roasted barley in the nose with a developing sweet chocolate note laced with a muted fruity berry aroma. Quite bitter in the mouth, with dry, roasted barley notes and a faint bitter chocolate powder note. Mostly lingering dry bitter roasted barley in the finish.

500ml bottle. Beige-capped black becoming headless. Buttered charcoal, blackened fudge, Toffos and coal dust aroma. Burnt wood, burnt paper taste with black cherry, toffee and briny hints; some iron, burnt toast. A bit thin and lacking condition but pleasant enough.

Cask. Dark ruby, lingering beige head. Smores in the nose and taste. A nice rich butter quality that goes well with the milk chocolate characteristic. Light bitterness on the finish.
