COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A dark hoppy beer without a traditional dark hoppy beer taste. Light roasted, chocolate malt transitions into a smooth finish with a hint of tangerine.
Formerly brewed at Sutter Buttes.

[Tap] Draught at WOB in Evanston, IL. Listed as ’Ruhstaller Capt. California Black IPA’. Inky black pour with a small brown head on top. Lots of roasted aroma in the aroma. Moderate hoppiness in the nose as well. More piney hops come out in the flavor. Burnt molasses and lingering resin in the taste. Mild alcohol warming. A nice black IPA.

(Hats off to Ken for the bottle.) Nose of tropical fruit and malt with slight hints of chocolate. A rich, ruddy, dark brown pour with a mostly lasting tan head which produced abuntent lacing. The taste is toasted malt with chocolate notes up front giving way to hints of hop produced tropical fruit along with some grain in the finish. A strong bitter flavor that is felt on the sides of the tongue lingers in the aftertaste. Medium body and medium carbonatin. Overall, a nice Black IPA - malts initially and hops completing the taste profile.

Very dark brown opaque pour with a tight tannish head. Aroma of chocolatey malts and resin. Not much citrus which I expected due to Citra hop presence. Toasty malt at initial and quickly flips to bitter hops. Nice balance here. Good effort

Best Black IPA I’ve ever tried. The head is a thing of carmel-colored beauty. The hops offer forward pine and citrus, and the palate and finish are smooth and balanced. Outstanding in the 22 oz. bottle, but make sure it is fresh. It does not age well.

Not a great black ipa. No aroma, no hops int he flavor, no bitterness. Just some light cocoa and dark malt flavors.

It poured a black color with a huge tan head. The aroma was of roasted malts and some grassy hops. The taste was of roasted malts that transitioned into the grassy hops. It had a medium body with a fairly smooth mouthfeel. Decent.

Can to glass. Dark chocolate color with a four finger khaki head. The head eventually fades to a thick lace on the glass. Aroma is a pleasant combination of roasted malts, honey, and a floral hop bouquet. Taste is a well balanced combination of floral hops and light roast. I’m not a fan of this style but this is a good brew.

A nice black IPA. Pours an awese deep black with a thick white head. Smells like hops, lots of hops, and some milk or ice cream. Not nearly as much in the taste though. Creamy upfront, with a slightly hoppy finish, but not bitter. Paired with Steak Tostada Bites, the garlic in the dish loses the creaminess in the beer and makes it a bit dryer. Had in the bottle for New Years 2014. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
