Bottle. Pours with a nearly black hued body with a medium lasting tan head. Aromas are nutty, earthy, medium malt, lightly citrusy hops. Flavors are earthy, tannic/astringent, roasted, very bitter (hops but mainly roast), unbalanced. All roasted malt flavor, minimal hop flavor. Really bitter. Hop character muted. A bit of citrus. Lively carbonation, medium bodied.

Extra received in a great trade with jvillefan.. Thanks a bunch Michael!! Poured into my thin tulip; the brew looks like a light porter with clear walnut beer near the stem end of my glass... tannish head only rises about a half inch, but somehow produces nice sheets of lacing.
nose is odd.. piney/citrus hoppiness with some roasty elements but something that I associate with molasses (fermented out)... light across the board... I would expect more from the hop and roasty malts to push this into the bigger boy category.
Flavor mirrors the nose nearly perfectly.. I know this isn’t an "Imperial Black IPA" at 7.3%, but the flavors seem watered down without any real maltiness or bigger hoppy flavors mid palate... a bit flaccid.
Body is lighter than expected too... carbonation is light and that really accentuates the light body.
More maltiness on the palate would help this brew deliver the roasty notes, hops, and make for a bigger body.. right now, it seems pretty watery given the prodigious expectations for a "new" style.

Pours dark black with a creamy tan head. Vaguely piney aroma. Roasted malt flavor with a lingering bitter aftertaste.

(bomber from bhensonb) Pours a black color with glints of red when held up to the light and a medium light tan head that retains well and leaves significant lacing. Aroma starts out promising, with scents of roasted malt, dark chocolate, cocoa, and some subtle hits of hops which are more of the pine stripe. Hint of orange moves in with warming. Overall the flavor is more hop forward than the nose would indicate, with some tastes of orange zest, grapefruit, light pine, and tangerine as well. There’s a bit of underlying malt here, but it lightly accompanies the stronger hop presence with flavors of roasted malt and dark chocolate. Mouthfeel is lighter than the appearance would indicate, and the carb is appropriate. Overall a solid Black IPA. Thanks Bill!

Light aromas of coconut milk and nuts. Appears black with a magenta hue and thin foam rim. Smooth, rich and decadent flavors of chocolate, toffee and mocha. Interesting chocolate milk taste upfront instantly falling into a creamy toffee/mocha combo and a nutty/hoppy finish. Overall, this is a very well done black IPA with tons of drinkability. I’d give this an A rating. Very unique.

From the bottle at the SF beer week opening celebration. It pours brown with a tan head. Nice hoppy piney aroma with coffee. A little cocoa. The flavor is strong piney, spicy hops with some coffee, toast and cocoa. Big fresh pine and spice. Awesome.

Ar: Resiny hops, citrus and black pepper - dark caramel and orange.
Ap: Black, opaque - large tan head with great retention, major cap of foam.
T: Smooth orange and bitter grapefruit up front - earthy and resiny hops, some pine - some toasted malt and burnt caramel - cocoa and coffee - clean yeast profile - high bitterness with a long orange finish.
P: Medium-bodied and silky smooth - very lush - finish is dry.
O: Wonderful BIPA - deep and satisfying malt profile harmoniously mixes with the delicious orange, resin, and pine character of the hops.

Thin head on a pitch black body.
The aroma dances between lemon and grapefruit to honey.
The taste starts with honey sweetness, then pine bitterness, finishes with a lemon bite. The sweetness at the beginning is great.
The texture has a softness with moderate carbonation and medium body.
This is a great BIPA.

On tap at The Firehouse Sacramento, fairly thick head, vague roasted aroma. Biftter front end falls a little flat.
