Bottle. Black color with a brown head. A solid black IPA. It has a rich malty body with a well balanced and nicely hopped finish. The malts are nice and chocolaty and there really is a hint of tangerine in the aroma.

355ml can from Ales by Mail

Pours pitch black with a thick head. Aroma of roasty malts, chocolate, metallic notes and licorice. Taste is roasty, sweetish and bitter with hints of grass and chocolate. Finish is lingering bitter, roasty and grassy with some licorice and malty notes. Quite roasty for a black IPA, and not that fruity hoppy.

Can, split at Bruce’s Pad, from Utobeer 28/05/14. Light black with a well appointed tan covering. Nose is big roasties, vanilla, caraeml, dark berry rub. Taste comprises dark malts, pine, tea bags, Ribena berries, light tropicana, herbal notes, light roast. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with hop bitterness. Ok CDA.

Keg @ Port Street Beer House. Pours very dark brown with creamy tan head. Has a fruity Vimto character alongside resinous hops and roasted notes, with a smooth mouthfeel. Very nice.

12 fluid ounce can (wtf America? Go metric already) from Beers of Europe. Pours clear dark brown thin beige head. Good resin aromas, light chocolate and pineapple. Taste is biter, Vertu light roast. Corking black ipa, on a par with the kernel!

Opaque black - brown beer, tidy pale tan head. Palate is smooth and airy with good fine carbonation. Very mild dark malts, a little cream and a whisper of dark chocolate. Smooth piney hops with a trace of orange citrus. Smooth finish. Nothing shouty about this, it’s just a fine smooth cda.

Perhaps it is because this bottle might have gotten cooked on the ride from Tahoe to the Bay, but this didn’t have much hop presence and tasted more like a porter. Lightly bitter, clean finish. Malty, sugary body. Meh.

Can shared in London - many thanks to Colin. Pours clear, dark brown with a fine, creamy tan head. The nose has toasty pine, brown bread. Medium sweet flavor with sugary brown bread, grains, pine, ripe citrus, grapefruit. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly resinous on the finish, some brown bread. Lightly aged pine, hints of toasted caramel, brown sugar, dark citrus. Pretty OK.

Can thanks to Colin. It pours near black with a small tan head. The nose is fish, roasty, pine, orange peel, potpourri, pine, varnish, sherbet and parma violets. The taste is bitter, toasty, earth, plum, citrus peel, mild acidity, ash, decent bitterness and caramel with a dry finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Good black IPA by all accords.

355ml can. Black liquid with brown foam that sticks around for the duration. Aroma has malty treacle and cola notes but not overly hoppy. Taste much the same. Hop resin at the edges. Fairly thick and creamy on the tongue with moderate bitterness. Decent black IPA, just lacking some bite perhaps.
