COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A dark hoppy beer without a traditional dark hoppy beer taste. Light roasted, chocolate malt transitions into a smooth finish with a hint of tangerine.
Formerly brewed at Sutter Buttes.

Black-brown but clear with some very dark ruby highlights when held up to a light. Very small head dissipates quickly but leaves some decent lacing. Aroma is excellently balanced between hops and chocolatey malt, though both are fairly subtle. Up front flavors are toasty-malty-lightly sweet and grapefruity-pine. Finish is appropriately bitter but it’s a nice, balanced bitterness between the chocolate malt astringency and hop bitterness. Body is light-medium and carbonation is slightly low, which is great for the balance of this beer and lends a certain creaminess to it. Overall a very nicely crafted black IPA.

33 cl can @ home shared by Dutchdrebus. Very dark brown to black color, small beige to light brown head. Aroma is malts, hops, lightly roasty. Taste malts, hops, bitter, a hint of caramel, lightly earthy, slightly metallic. Average to medium body and carbonation. Ok beer.

Draught at BrewDog Shepherd’s Bush on 14 Oct. Poured a clear, dark ruby with a dense off white head. Aroma was malt heavy, with some fruit loaf and caramel sweetness. Flavour and mouth feel were reminiscent of cola, with definite burnt sugar and some bready malt. Finish was boiled sweets, sweetened coffee and chocolate. Too sweet for my liking and lacking on the hop front.

On tap at Junkyard, Nottingham on 8 October 2014. Listed (on chalkboard) as Ruhstaller Captain Black at 7.6% but I guess this is the one. Very spicy and grassy hops for a black IPA. Strongly bitter but not so roasty, developing a sweetness on the finish. A bit odd maybe but fine. Looks good. Dark brown with a lasting beige head.

12 oz can. From alesbymail.co.uk.
Reddish brown - almost black - colour with a tiny tan head. As there’s no any kind of date on the can it’s impossible to say how fresh is this. Medicinal aroma with cough drops, Coke and malt. The flavour is raisins, dates, plums, sweetness, hoppy bitterness and sweet malt... What is this? Very sweet. A mixture of Belgian Dubbel and IPA? Very soft carbonation.

"Starts of pretty tame, but opens up quite nicely. Lighlty floral aroma, with a good dose of citrus and lightly roasted dark malts. The malts really open up nice in the flavor. A good beer to introduce someone to the style, as it still ends up pretty mellow without being boring. At $6-7 per bomber, though, priced as a premium brand."

Bottle. Black beer with a strong light brown head. The aroma is reasonably roasted, and the flavour is bitter with some coffeeness and hops. Overall a nice dark IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Can. Pours black to deep brown with an average, lacing, beige head. Aroma of rosted malt,, coffee, piney notes, grapefruit and other citrus fruits. Sweet flavor that ends up dry and bitter. Medium bodied, oily texture and soft carbonation. A very nice Black IPA.
