War Elephant is as unapologetic as Double IPAs get. At over 4lbs. of hops per barrel, War Elephant contains a completely irrational amount of hops designed to create a unique hop experience. It has a “smack-you-in-the-face” hop aroma consisting of pine needles, grapefruit, tangerine, and other citrus fruits. Unlike many other Double IPAs, though, War Elephant has a subdued malt character so it’s never cloyingly sweet, and at 80 IBUs it isn’t overly bitter. Like all Rushing Duck beers, War Elephant is unfiltered so as not to strip any of the precious hop aromas from the beer. As a result it has a hazy golden color with a thick rocky head. It is our Fall seasonal, so enjoy the limited release while it’s fresh!

The name: War Elephants date back the 4th century BC in India where elephants were bred and trained to fight in an “elephant cavalry” as transport, but also as a weapon used to stampede the enemy. Unconfirmed rumors suggest that the elephants were sometimes given fermented beverages as a means to make them more aggressive as well as feel numb to injuries of war. Rushing Duck Brewing in no way encourages you to feed beer to elephants or any other animal, nor do we encourage animal fighting…but it is a pretty cool story.

5oz pour at Torst. Pours a hazy orange with some sudsy white head. Nose has quite a bit of sticky orange, dank pine, grapefruit zest, some fresh cut herbs and grass. Some sweetness in the mouth, honey comb, the fresh grass is right there though, dank pine, grapefruit, orange, soapy. Full bodied, sticky, bitter finish.

Poured from a growler. Amber in color. Pine and citrus aroma. Can definitely pick up the pine and citrus in the taste. Good amount of hops.

Heavy malt backbone filled with plenty of citrus hops. Very strong pine characteristics. Smooth drink great local brewery. Well local for me.

Growler, pours copper amber. Notes are sugar, orange hops, pine, and grain. Good but too big and sweet for my tastes.

Draft at Pony Bar. Pours golden orange with a white head. Dankity dank pine, fruit, citrus hops, sweet malts, and pretty big bitterness. A little rough around the edges, but definitely enjoyable.

Nice malty hoppy aroma, some citrus and some piney. Taste is malty with citrus hops and a bitter piney hop finish. Malt balance is great. This is a nice ipa. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft at pony bar HK. Pours a clear golden body with super thin white lacing. Aroma is grapefruit and light funky melon. Mouthfeel is medium and slick with notes of sweet citrus fruits, dank melon, clementines, tangerines and sweet residual sugars. If it wasn’t for the overtly sweet character, this would be world class. Super subtle citrus and funky melon flavors are a bit distracted by the sweetness.

Growler at home, courtesy of the GotC. Thanks man! Pour is hazy orange with a fluffy white head and great lacing. Grapefruity, lightly resinous, a hint of vanilla, almost woody, orange peel, marzipan, and sweet malty aroma. Taste is weed, bitter fruit peel, bready, slightly alcoholic - but not overbearing - earthy, lightly oxidized, grassy, and orange peel with a medium bitter finish. Slick mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Pretty tasty DIPA and this stuff will get you buzzed quick.

8 aug 2013, bottle (apparently Simone bottled it from the source but it isn't a brewery bottled beer). Yellow, clear, some bubbles. Nose is serious grassy and floral hops. Thin/med body and mildly fizzy. Resin hops and dry bitterness. Nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
