COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A wee angry scotch ale is part of the Russell Brewmaster Series: a succession of small batch beers that push taste boundaries and explore new styles of beers. This beer has been brewed with a blend of Scottish specialty malts in the style of a 19th century 90 Shilling Scotch Ale - a strong, dark ale with a dominant malt accent that originated in Edinburgh. This batch of beer was brewed by Jack Bensley, Eric Dubuc and Anders McKinnon, Russell Brewing Company 2010.

Pours a clear dark ruby red with an off white ring. Aroma of caramel, smoke, light peat & salt. Taste is caramel, smoke and a slight bitterness on the finish. Body isnít as full as youíd expect for the color and aroma.

Bottle at RBAG, from my commemorative RBAG glass. Pours clear brown, with a thin off-white head, and spotty lacing. Nose is smoky caramel, salt, honey. Iím getting a bit tired of these big, sweet beers. Scotch Ales, Barleywines, Old Ales, American Strongs etc. They just start to run into one another, and become much the same beer. Flavours of soft caramel, smoke, honey, sweet malt, fudge. A decent enough brew, but really not my thing anymore.

Darn good brew. Purely opaque dark brown with a thick creamy beige head. The nose is well malted and moderately roasted with light peat and Smokey scotch notes. Very drinkable and full Bodied. Overall an easy to drink and tasty peaty roasted malts.

Nice dark cloudy color, but very small and short head. Interesting malty taste, everyone should try it.

RBAG Summer Session 2012. Pours a very deep orange-amber with a small diminishing creamy tan head. Aroma of caramel malt, light smoke, nuts and some chocolate. Slightly watery flavour of toasted caramel malt, smoke and light hops in the dry finish. Average to medium bodied.

Single bottle purchased from a BC Liqour Store in Vernon, BC on 03/11/2011. Colour: Dark brown with hints of orange. Minimal head. Nose: Pureed tomato, flank steak, malt vinegar. Taste: Medium-light sweet, medium-light bitter, medium sour. More meaty stuff....like something mysterious that was boiled in a pot for hours then covered in tomato sauce. Malted barely comes through with a bit of sweet saviour but then long lingering leather and roughness on the finish. Certainly not one of the best Russellís iíve tasted.

I really enjoyed this one... I think itís the ashy mouthfeel that does it for me. Or maybe because Scotch ales are all too often cloying, and this one struck the perfect balance for my taste. I have a love affair with nuts too and this one of course reminded me of that (donít tell my SO). Kept it at the back of my fridge way too long.

(Originally written for the Summer 2010 issue of TAPS Magazine.) Scotch Ale is a style not often brewed in Canada, so a tip of the hat to Russell for taking a crack at it as part of their Russell Brewmaster Series of limited edition brews. It has the requisite mahogany-brown colour with a creamy cap of off-white foam, and an on-point aroma of sweet, caramel-like malt with a nutty edge and a hint of smoke. The body is on the light side for the style (as is the 6.5% alcohol level), but the flavour makes up for it, with pleasant notes of dark toffee, roasted nuts, a bit of cocoa, and just enough hops to balance the sweetness without being noticeable otherwise. I generally like a bit more heft in both body and booze from my Scotch Ales, but this one is so enjoyable otherwise that Iíll let it slide.

My new favourite. Not one to quaff after cutting the grass on a hot summer day. More of a winter ale. Delightful. roasty, caramel, resin, floral, smoke,
