Blood Alley Bitter is an Extra Special Bitter named after a notorious cobblestone laneway in Vancouver’s Gastown district. At 50 ibu this beer is slightly higher in bitterness than the average ESB but it is well balanced by the rich roasted malt flavours

Pours a clear light amber colour with a big frothy white head. Aroma is a light mix of grains and caramel malts with not much else really. Taste is mildly bitter initially, which is followed by a lingering sweetness. Light body, average carbonation, thinner on the palate. A very enjoyable bitter.

Appearance: clear pale amber with one finger of growing fluffy off-white head, excellent retention and chunky lacing. (4/5) Aroma: grainy caramel and biscuity malt, citrus, pine, grassy and light floral. (7/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate bitter. (7/10) Medium body, moderate carbonation, off-dry medium duration bitter finish. (3/5) A bitter, that’s actually bitter? What’s next, a premium lager that’s actually premium? Solid ESB, with a decent hop presence only slightly behind a biscuity caramel malt. Pleasant body with a drying bitter finish. Solid example of a style that usually fails to impress. (14/20)

Lightly hazy with white head that leaves good lacing. Pleasant bitterness though ends up being kind of one-dimensional by the end of the pint.

On tap at Smith. Pours a clear amber orange with a white head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has a bit of bread and grains with a light fruity hop note. Flavor combines grass and grains with a bread note underlying.

Draught @ The Beacon, Whistler B.C. Caramax!! Bitter, where? None to be had. Completely overboard sugary sweet, caramel, cookie dough. Looks pretty enough, clear red copper, beige head, but a frappacino at Starbucks is more bitter...

An enjoyable bitter with a moderate malt and nice showing of hops. Biscuity and bready malts with light citrus and floral, spicy hops show in a light amber body. The finish is moderately bitter with light astringency.
