This beer is arresting. And we are not mentioning this because smokey is slang for police. Rather, because this Bamberg-Style Marzen Rauchbier is brewed with 98% German beechwood-smoked malt and has a complex smokey (the non-police kind) characteristic, resulting in a smooth and crisp finish. This deep amber lager pairs beautifully with smoked and barbecued meats. Doughnuts, not so much.

Okay head and brownish body but you can see through it, sort of. Very heavy smelly leather aroma, beef jerky, nitrite smoke. Flavour is heavy and thick smoke with leather. Chewy. Harsh stuff to drink. I’ve never been a huge fan of smoked beers and this one comes on too strong.

Bottle from CANBIF 2015 via Ferris. Mahogany with a tan head that mostly fades. I am picky when it comes to smoked beers and this one had a combination of burnt maple syrup with smoked meat and some campfire characteristics that just didn’t combine well for me.

650ml brown bottle. Dark orangey brown in colour, looks clear. Small beige cap, thin lacing. Aroma is smoky and meaty. Taste - nice up front smokiness, meaty notes, light sweetness, touch of hops. Finishes with a little bitterness and dryness and light smoky aftertastes. Another surprisingly good beer from these guys, I’d almost given up on them.

Bottle, the second beer on TvM’s Bachelor Party Northwest Ale Trail Expedition. Medium tea coloured amber. Aroma of campfire smoke, slightly meaty. Thinnish caramel malt, but lovely smoke character in the true Bamburg tradition. Nicely done.

Pours black, big head. Aroma of Smoke mesquite. Taste is mesquite, dark roasted coffee. It’s ok, a smidge fake tasting.

A fantastic brew. Russell is making some great stuff lately. Pours a light brown amber with a finger of foamy yellowish head. The aroma has a smoky predominance with an earthy malt that includes notes of bacon, vanilla and heavy wooden aromas. A bit sweet up front with light toffee malt notes and a bit of a light fruity flavor. There are layers of smoked malt that make this a complex brew with a moderate smoke profile. The finish has light bitterness. A very much accurate Bamberg style Rauch but for the lighter body and slight sweetness. A great brew regardless.

650ml bottle pours a dark brown color with a finger of off-white head that leaves a few spots of lacing on the glass. Aroma is bacon and smoke with some chocolate and dark fruit notes. Taste is smoke with a slight roasted grain and grassy hop bitterness with a chocolate malt and slight dark fruity sweetness. Was a little surprised at the complexity going on here. Quite a nice smoked brew.

Deep amber-brown, aroma has a lot of beech smoke...good stuff...I assume Weyermann but the dose is pure Schlenkerla. A bit thin on the malts, but the smoke is nice. A touch sweet in the finish. That it invites comparison to greatness is impressive. Yum.

Bomber. Clear dark red copper, light tan foam settles slowly. Smell is reminiscent of walking thru a recently extinguished house fire. Tastes like a dirty chimney with some sweet lager c-malt. Average carbonation, medium bodied, low hopped. I couldn’t finish it either. Blech. NFL (Not For Lagerboys)

Bottle - Bacony with some dark fruit and finishes with smoke. Clear mahogany with a rich beige head. Taste has some chocolate, dark fruit, toasted malts and a smokey dry finish. This beer is nice as it has much more going on than just the smoke, the chocolate I get at the front is very surprising.
