This beer is arresting. And we are not mentioning this because smokey is slang for police. Rather, because this Bamberg-Style Marzen Rauchbier is brewed with 98% German beechwood-smoked malt and has a complex smokey (the non-police kind) characteristic, resulting in a smooth and crisp finish. This deep amber lager pairs beautifully with smoked and barbecued meats. Doughnuts, not so much.

Deep amber-brown, aroma has a lot of beech smoke...good stuff...I assume Weyermann but the dose is pure Schlenkerla. A bit thin on the malts, but the smoke is nice. A touch sweet in the finish. That it invites comparison to greatness is impressive. Yum.

Bomber. Clear dark red copper, light tan foam settles slowly. Smell is reminiscent of walking thru a recently extinguished house fire. Tastes like a dirty chimney with some sweet lager c-malt. Average carbonation, medium bodied, low hopped. I couldn’t finish it either. Blech. NFL (Not For Lagerboys)

Bottle - Bacony with some dark fruit and finishes with smoke. Clear mahogany with a rich beige head. Taste has some chocolate, dark fruit, toasted malts and a smokey dry finish. This beer is nice as it has much more going on than just the smoke, the chocolate I get at the front is very surprising.

Bottle from Legacy Liquor, Vancouver
Dark brown color; medium sized head, not very persistent. The smoke aroma is deep, persistent, with the campfire and smoked ham character of the Aecht Schlenkerla Märzen from which this one clearly takes inspiration; there is also some wood oven bread. The mouthfeel is dry; dark caramel flavor, with some darker, burnt sugar; strong smoke presence, smoked ham, light ashes; correct bitterness. The final is a bit too dry and ashy.
Remarkably close to the original.

Poured from 650mL bottle. Clear, copper colour with minimal tan head. Full smokey aroma and flavour of bacon and hickory. Medium body. A well done smoked beer.

Dark amber pour. Aromas of maple smoked bacon, toast. Flavour has a lot of upfront smoke with some meatiness and char. I actually enjoyed this.

Ha, misread the last two sentences on the bottle’s description and thought it was aimed at another brewer’s smoked beer. Bomber, pours deep copper with white head. Nose is extraordinarily smokey, beechwood campfire I suppose. Flavour is some nuttiness and toastiness but mainly smoke... we had a laugh about the licking a BBQ comment. Yeah not sure what to say about this one, love the smoke but Holy Toledo... even by the end of half a bomber I’d had enough. Should be sold in individual small bottles. I love those smoked almonds but only a handful at a time, not a bomber’s worth.

650 ml bottle. Pours a dark mahogany with moderate head of big bubbles. Aromas of campfire and heavily smoked bacon. On no... Flavors of burnt plastic and hickory ash. Kinda thought this would be the result. An experience that can be experience for free by burning garbage.

Bomber from a local bottle shop. I’ll forego any detailed notes on this one. I like a good rauchbier and there are some good ones out there, but this one is done with a very heavy hand. As mcberko noted, "like you’re licking the inside of a BBQ". Yes, but not in a good way. I might have to mix this with something else to make it go down and stay down. Yikes!

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours a deep dark amber / mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma of mesquite BBQ notes and liquid smoke. Flavour brings out smoked meat, liquid smoke, and slight sweetness. Quite smoky, but not overburdeningly so. Tastes like you’re licking the inside of a BBQ. Decent.
