jarspag (593), Los Angeles, California, USA Mar 5, 2008 3rd Annual Woodshop Tasting, 3/1/08. Thanks Chris! Batch 001. Stand-up brew. The flavor was just spot on with oak, brett, mild funk, some grass, hay, lemon - - - palate is smooth as can. A massage on the gums - tingling and lovely. The time in the bottle did this thing right. I’m in love with this elixir...if you have any, I’ll take it off your hands! wetherel (1565), Encinitas, California, USA Mar 5, 2008 Batch 001. Tasted at 2008 Woodshop hosted by cquiroga. Real treat to be able to try this. Mild sourness. Super easy to drink. This is one of those beers I need a gallon for every day drinking. Light yellow color. Microfoam ring around the edge of the glass. Bubblegum pleasant Brett aroma. Not too dry. Very good.
hapjydeuce (763), Del Mar, California, USA Mar 3, 2008 Updated: Jan 16, 2009Opened at the 3rd Annual Woodshop Tasting in Temple City on 3/1/08. Major thanks to cquiroga for one hell of a tasting! Batch 001 bottle I think? Damn I’ve been waiting to try this for a long time. This was a standout for me. Deep blond color with some major bubbles and white lacing. Smooth and subtle sour nose with oak wood, white wine and funky fermentation. Hell yeah. Bomber flavor that leaves you craving the next sip. Old oak wood & musty cellar tones complement grassy and light fruit flavors. Some pear and lemon in front of the pleasing barrel-perfected finish. Sourness is spot on, not too puckering or weak; but at a level that lingers on the palate for a good while with pleasant yeast underneath. Dry finish with tickling carbonation, its extremely difficult for me not to give the palate a 5. Great balance. One of the best sours I’ve had. Thanks again Chris for sharing this one. Simply awesome. CapFlu (3480), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Feb 29, 2008 (Batch 001 375ml Bottle) At hospitable Enniskillen’s RR Batch 001 Party. White frothy head settles to the side of the glass atop an orange body. Wild yeasty nose with sour undertones. cherries, vinegar, tart, lemony. Puckeringly sour with a tonic finish. So very good. railcat1 (578), Orlando, Florida, USA Feb 15, 2008 I saved this for a special day and it was today my #300 rating and another one of my favorite styles. This was batch ph-1 and was a smooth but bitter sour ale in its own way,it had a funky kinda taste and a tartness to it like most other sours,it was great and i was glad i held on to this beer because next to this style i like imperial stouts the total opposite of styles go figure.CHEERS JoeinUccle (902), Brussels, Belgium Feb 13, 2008 Thanks to Brad, we tasted the PH1 and 001 side-by-side. Both offered an almost lambic-like funky nose, with gorgeous notes of cider-must and flowers. Oaky, lemony, unripe oranges. I could have smelled this beer all night. The nose on the PH1 was softer, less rough and intense than the 001. Both tasted very tart and juicy, but the PH-1 was much smoother, with just a hint of bitterness. In the 001 the bitterness was higher, and discordant, muting the juiciness a bit. An odd chemical touch there too. The 001 was just rougher around the edges. Both were outstanding. My rating is a composite of both. hellomynameis (794), Mayer, Minnesota, USA Jan 22, 2008 001-PH1. I finally had the opportunity to try this beer, despite trying for a very long time. Amber orange body with a tall and quickly disappearing fizzy white head. This is pretty clear for the most part but got murkier at the end of the bottle despite my efforts to decant. Lots of citrus tartness in the aroma with a bit of mustyness. There is a ton going on in the flavour, fruits, cherries, bretty sourness, citrus, and green apples. Huge carbonation but it’s not harsh, instead it bubbles smoothly over the tongue. Nice mouthfeel and flavour, really well done. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA Jan 2, 2008 Courtesy of wohlfs. July ’06. Golden, hazy/murky, nice white head. Great sour geueze, lemon like aroma. Faint dusty/musty character. Flavor again has huge lemon like sourness, mouth puckering. Apple tartness and dry woody tannins through the middle. Some strange residuel sweetness near the finish. Huge carboantion works well to clean the palate and thirst for more. Very nice overall.
