Ughsmash (2615), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA May 1, 2008 Bottle at the Flossmoor Pre-DLD party! Poured cloudy apple juice golden with about zero head sticking around. The aroma was heavenly.. sour and seductive with fruit skins, a touch of wheat, and bracing vinegar notes.. strong and enjoyable. The flavor found sour vinegar upfront with bracing sourness throughout.. fruit skins, a little wheat, and a huge kick from funky yeast round it out.. delightfully balanced (on the sour, funky end).. one of those that will most assuredly take some of the lining off your stomach. Tart and bracing on the palate, but well executed. Loved it!
railcat1 (411), KISSIMMEE, Florida, USA May 16, 2008 This was a nice sour and not to overwhelming it poured a nice light gold color and had no head but it did have a bitter grapefruit kick to it and strong aroma but very enjoyable and tart.CHEERS! DeweyDell (133), Columbus, Ohio, USA May 15, 2008 Light golden color. Aroma is sour... not that complex, but nice. Taste is sour, funky, a little bit of vinegar but not too much to be overwhelming. This is my least favorite of the 4 Russian River beers that I’ve had (not nearly as distinguished as the Supplication or Temptation - it would have a very familiar taste to anyone who has had a couple sour beers) but I am definitely enjoying every drop. DrHomolka (550), Columbus, Ohio, USA May 15, 2008 Pours a light blonde/golden color with pretty much no head. Some swirls rotate in the middle and the thinnest rim of bubbles circle the glass but the apparent carbonation on this is very low. Aroma intensely funky and sour smelling, certainly more than its two brothers. We’re getting into Gueuze territory here. Barnyard is heavy, something that was relatively light or non-existant in the Supplication and Temptation. Huge brett presence, hay, horse, more barnyard funk, dog, creek (not kriek, creek, like rivers and mud and stuff) Very powerful smell. Lemons and other acidic fruits also make an appearance. I can tell this thing is going to be sour just from the smell. Taste is highly acidic and tart which fades into a lemony flavor which is even sourer then a dry finish. This thing is like a lemonhead. This is very, very lambic like. I certainly would have guessed this is some type of Gueuze or unblended lambic had I not known what I was drinking. While it is exciting drinking a 100% spontaneously fermented beverage from the US, and while this certainly holds up to its Belgian counterparts, and while it is delicous and awesome on its own, I think this is not on the same level of Temptation or Supplication. I am very interested in trying the batch 1 version of this. I’m sad I have no more Russian River in the fridge.
