COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ale with currants added and aged in oak barrels.

When we made the Toronado’s 20th Anniversary Ale, we had no idea that it would turn out to be one of our favorite barrel aged beers we would ever make. With that said, we have always wanted to make a dark barrel aged beer using 100% Cabernet Sauvignon barrels but, we never were inspired. That is, until we blended five different beers to make the Toronado beer, the tobacco character from the the dark malts blended nicely with the furit character that developed in blending. So, with Concescration we set out to make a barrel beer using all Cabernet Sauvignon barrels. No, we are not saying that this is a replica of the T-rooms anniversary beer, after all, a beer like that can never be duplicated, and, there was no fruit added to that beer as there is with this one. All we are saying is that it gave us great inspiration to brew Consecration.

On tap at Beachwood BBQ poured into a tulip. Appears reddish brown with a thin cap that is not sticking. Aroma is sour cherries (the currants?), vinegar, barrel notes of oak and grape, plus tobacco and the yeast/bacteria funk. Flavors start with puckering tart cherry, ease into light fruit sweetness, and end with those drying red wine elements. Medium-full bodied, silky texture, active carbonation, and a dry finish. Complex and interesting overall.

UPDATED: JUN 29, 2015 Sampler at the brewpub in Santa Rosa. Copper-amber color with small white ring. Oaky, apple tartness, plumbs, caramel. Still definitely a Sour Red, but it?s American - undoubtful. Taste is heavy on the lemon citrusness, but also plums, candied apples, and a bit bitter - feels like a heavy french red-wine, quite tanninic. Perfect mouthfeel. A truly great beer.

Colored a deep crimson-brown, with a little yellow at the edges. Smell is of caramel malts and syrupy molasses. Carbonation is noticeable in the nose and almost burns the nostrils if you whiff too close. Flavor is two-sided: malt up front, tartness in the back. Barrel-aging produced a very pronounced wood flavor, almost like chewing on a piece of oak. You get a blast of orangey lemon citrus just at the swallow. Tartness is most noticeable as you begin to drink, but the dark, rich, woody flavors come after the swallow and builds after each sip. Medium body. Heavily carbonated almost to champagne levels, but it works. A complex and delicious brew, with each flavor pairing beautifully and playing off the others. Bottles empty themselves quickly in my presence.

Wood and tart plum aroma. Flavor of tartness malts and dark fruits. Finishes dry and plumb wine like.

3 oz chilled pour from tap into cylindrical taster as part of Russian River’s “everything on tap” sampled (16 beers this time around) at the brewery itself. I realize that drinking 16 different 3 oz pours is not ideal for proper rating, but when will I ever have an opportunity like this again? Tastes like a very sour cider. Bit fruity, but in a different kind of way.

37.5 cl bottle enjoyed @ home. Pours reddish brown/deep amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is grape, sour fruit, oak, overripe fruit and currants. Flavour is acidic sour and a little funky. Medium bodied, slick texture, fizzy carbonation.

Reserve Bottle Program at Russian River. 750 mL bottle from Batch 2 bottled on 30 March 2009. The pour is a dark brownish red with a thin ring of light egg shell colored head and no lace. The aroma is a little winey but the oak, currants, and malts are really good. The aroma is so well melded. The flavor is excellent. A little grape, a lot of currant, and some wonderful oak. It’s definitely dry as well. Sharp and tart. The mouth feel is good. It’s dry, but moderately viscous. The carbonation is just about perfect, even after all these years. The aftertaste is lingeringly winey and full of sharp dry currants. Great beverage ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Rust color, no real head but some sparkling carbonation. Great balance flavor if sour tartness and some rose wine character. Finishes with a light oak and cigar box flavor.

This beer has a rich brown color no head. It has a very sour aroma. It definitely has wine like flavors and is amazingly smooth and light for 10%.
