COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the great beer producing country of Belgium, some brewers have made it a tradition to give their beers an unusual name. Sometimes the name is curious, now and then it is diabolical and other times it is just plain silly. Damnation is our brewmaster’s interpretation of a Belgian style Strong Golden Ale. It has extraordinary aromas of banana and pear with mouth filling flavors of sweet malt and earthy hops. The lingering finish is dry and slightly bitter but very, very smooth.

Editor’s Note: this entry is for all batches EXCEPT batches 23, 46 and 69 see separate entry.

(06.27.06) One pint, 9.4 oz brown bottle from Liquorama.com. 7% ABV. Batch 007. Poured hazy golden yellow with large white head. Good carbonation. Light-to-medium bodied Belgium-style golden ale that starts with light malt sweetness and fruity (apple)/ citrus (orange peel)/spicy (coriander) flavors. Some medicinal phenols detected. Finished dry with light hop bitterness. A very good tasty ale.

Light bronze colored. Strong aromas of citrus, mainly comprised of lemons. Yeast and coriander accompany the nose to make a touch musty. The flavor has notes of bitter orange with some coriander and pepper to spice it up. Yeasty as well. The citrus also reminds one of lemon heads. The tail is a touch sour.

Thanks to Odeed for this bottle - pours a slightly hazy golden color with a well-retained, foamy head - complex, earthy aroma of orange peel, banana, apple, vanilla, some yeast and pastry-like sweetness, and a subtle funkiness in the background - very soft on the palate - mildly sweet up front, with all the fruits from the aroma making appearances - this is followed by some medium-dry, herbal and hoppy qualities - a mild vanilla and clove flavor throughout - peppery finish, with just a hint of alcohol warmth arriving quite late - this is a great beer.

Aroma of yeast and cobwebs as the cork is removed, giving way to pear as it pours, with huge banana coming out as it warms. Appears a clear golden-yellow with noticeable effervescence, and with a huge frothy white head that reduces but does not dissipate. Flavor is supremely balanced, with sweet honey as it strikes the tongue, soft bitter hops in the middle, and a clove and peppery spice at the finish. Palate is dry but not too dry, and very refreshing. Overall, an excellent brew and one which I am very happy to have tasted.

Courtesy of Pailhead, another bottle from whom I don’t recall right now. Golden with minimal head. Aroma has a huge skunk character, which I am not a fan of, but offset by residuel sugar and grassy hops. Reading other reviews, maybe this bottle had too much sun, who knows. Flavor again has all kinds of residuel sugar and floral hops. Skunk sort of fades away. Finishes very dry.

UPDATED: JAN 3, 2009 750ml bottle - Batch 006: Lemon blonde pour with a huge, creamy head. Leaves fantastic, sticky, spider web lacing. The nose is slightly sour with a lemony orange sweetness and fresh bread note. The body is sticky and fruity - apples, pear - lush, creamy mouthfeel. The body dries out in the finish. Very good. 4

750ml - Batch 40: The yeast doesn’t seem as springy as the earlier batch I had. Somewhat deadened, the esthers aren’t as punchy. Still, a solid example that shows some nice depth with the malt and yeast interplay. 3.6

Bottle at the Vine (San Diego) Sweet and fruity, a bit syrupy. Nice strong golden color with a cloudy head. Complex flavors and noticable hops for a belgian. Finishes of pears and lemons, Strangely dry at the end... makes it refreshing with a slight warming.
