In the great beer producing country of Belgium, some brewers have made it a tradition to give their beers an unusual name. Sometimes the name is curious, now and then it is diabolical and other times it is just plain silly. Damnation is our brewmaster’s interpretation of a Belgian style Strong Golden Ale. It has extraordinary aromas of banana and pear with mouth filling flavors of sweet malt and earthy hops. The lingering finish is dry and slightly bitter but very, very smooth.

On tap at the brewery. I think some Belgian beer makers wish they could brew a Belgian this good. Aromas of citrusy fruits, a little grassy and some apricots. Appearance was yellow, clear with a nice head. Flavors were light, fleshy fruits with some yeast character, slightly peppery.

Draft at the Grey Lodge in Philly. Nice solid rendition of the style. Slight spicy taste to it.

Batch 003 - served in a Damnation Tulip. The aroma was fruity and bready with a citrusy and pineapple character after first being poured. Some candy sweetness was notable and a light earthy pepper spice. The beer was lightly hazy golden with a white lowish head which did last to lace the glass. The flavor was fruity and nicely bittered with a strong presence of peppery spice. The flavor was earthy and coupled with a light candy caramel worked well to achieve a nice balance. The bittering was actually quite high, but not overdone in the least. The flavor had a bready component and some pineapple. The beer was medium with a moderate to high level of carbonation. A really nice Belgian Strong Golden, great out of the bottle or on draft. 750 ml corked and bailed bottle.

UPDATED: JUL 11, 2007 Sample from 750 ml corked bottle. Hazy yellow colour with a mostly lasting fizzy white head. Dry, yeasty, lightly acidic aroma and flavours. Flavour also adds citrus and other fruits. Medium bodied, dry and fizzy mouthfeel.

UPDATED: MAY 24, 2007 sample at pub. Another solid beer that isn’t as complex as the others but still drinkable. There was definetly a sour apple in this one. Re-Rate: Bottle. Pours yellow/gold witha nice sized white head. Aroma of yeast, bread, banana. Taste is same as aroma but with a bit of spice and hop thrown in as well. Very nice.

Crystal clear golden yellow with a thick sudsy head. The aroma is rather delicate and fruity. I can smell apples and lemons and kiwi. The flavor is equally delicate and fruity. More of that apple and some pear. I have come to expect better from Russian River Brewing, but y’know? This isn’t half bad.

750ml bottle, batch 003 Pours a slightly cloudy, golden hued straw color with a one finger head. The head fades fairly quickly to a soapy cap, and thick ring, leaving behind a thin webbing of lace. Smell; lots of tropical fruits, with mangoes, pineapple and some citrus that I can’t quite nail down and pears. There’s a bit of cloves and yeast, as well as some mid spices. Taste; as with the nose, this is dominated by the fruits, with the mangoes, pineapples, pears and citrus. The spiciness is a bit more noticeable in the flavor, and the cloves are very present as well. There’s a bit of a bitterness in the finish, as well as a bit of a drying effect. After a while the spices and fruity flavors become a bit of a burden for me, and make this a little hard to finish Mouthfeel/Drinkability; mouthfeel is medium bodied, but with a light carbonation it almost comes off a bit lighter. Very smooth and easy to drink, but for me it’s almost a little too fruity, otherwise this is a really good beer.

Pours a bright gold, very clear, with a tall white head. If Duvel were fruity, slightly less dry, and had a slight sour finish they would be brothers. Great malt base with a pineapple and pear fruitiness with a nice herbal hop finish.

Poured a cloudy light yellow with an effervescent white head. Nice fruity aroma. Flavor is dry and well hopped, with a finish that really is nice and avoids being overly sweet.
