In the great beer producing country of Belgium, some brewers have made it a tradition to give their beers an unusual name. Sometimes the name is curious, now and then it is diabolical and other times it is just plain silly. Damnation is our brewmaster’s interpretation of a Belgian style Strong Golden Ale. It has extraordinary aromas of banana and pear with mouth filling flavors of sweet malt and earthy hops. The lingering finish is dry and slightly bitter but very, very smooth.

GABF 2005: Golden rod hued with a good frothy head which fades but left some lace. The aroma has notes of belgian sugar candi, honey, earthy and dusty yeast esters, banana, herbal hops and a buttery notes. The taste starts with a twangy apple, apricot and banana fruit character balanced by bready malts. A bit sugery and hints of clove and nutmeg as well. The feel is surprisingly lively and biting which help cut through that sweetness nicely. A nice brew, I dig it.

Batch 3. Upon extraction of the cork, it was evident that that this would have a run at Duvel. Lightly clouded light golden liquid with a taller foamy head that settles slightly with the first few sips. Light toasted pale malts detected slightly behind blossoming wild flowers and herbs. Cloves, licorice, menthol and allspice blow in to mix with pears, apples and bananas. Full body that is deftly lifted off the tongue to create a light and fine champagne feel. Fairly dry start. A honey or perhaps candi type of dryness. Mild fruit, including peaches and pears. Very spicy. A breath-mint type beer to quote the wife with all the spice in the finish. A very tasting and refreshing brew much in the family with Duvel and now Jolly Pumpkin. Sure wish these were more available to me.

Hazy pale yellow with a big head. Grainy malts with a shy sweetness. Very spicy and hoppy. Nice bitterness. Notes of pepper and coriander. Finishes dry. Pretty good stuff.

Bright golden pour, with cloudy yeast and good carbonation. Yeast carries over in aroma, with some nutmeg and fruit. Taste is light for this kind of brew. Malt and banana, kind of like bread pudding, but with a crisp, a slightly hoppy finish.

Thanks to DarkElf. Batch 003. Pours an active lush yellow with a clean white head. Aroma is yeasty and fruited. Spiced and a faint bananna along with a warm alcohol presence and a dry wine character. Flavor has a tangy fruityness to it. Bananna flavors and spices. Wheats and yeast, sweet and earthy. Its has a plesant dry finish and is a nice beer.

Cloudy golden with a thick white head. A lot of foam but who cares. Terrific aroma with citrus, orange, pear, vanilla, banana, caramel and apple. The taste starts off with vanilla and pear mainly. The finish is where the orange really comes through. Mouthfeel is really malty with a great fruitiness. Just a terrific beer in my opinion.

2005. Definitely worth aging as it is showing few complexities thus far. A lot of potential here with good crispness, balance, restrained Belgian qualities with some fruit and spice. Give it some time and sure good things will happen.

UPDATED: SEP 21, 2005 Pours cloudy gold/yellow, with a white head. Aromas are yeast, bananas, spice and fruit. Flavor starts sweet, and moves towards sour. Fruit, yeast, bananas, and some hops are all there. A nice one, a little different than some others of this style. Thanks to DarkElf for this bottle.
