Commercial Description:
In the great beer producing country of Belgium, some brewers have made it a tradition to give their beers an unusual name. Sometimes the name is curious, now and then it is diabolical and other times it is just plain silly. Damnation is our brewmaster’s interpretation of a Belgian style Strong Golden Ale. It has extraordinary aromas of banana and pear with mouth filling flavors of sweet malt and earthy hops. The lingering finish is dry and slightly bitter but very, very smooth.

Editor’s Note: this entry is for all batches EXCEPT batches 23 and 46 <a href=/beer/russian-river-damnation-batch-23-(oak-aged)/74510/>see separate entry.

Bottle and draft at liberty street and union jacks. Clear gold pour with a fluffy white head. Aroma is of citrus (lemony), spice (clove, corriander and pepper) and sweet banana. Flavor is crisp with the lemon and spice leading the way, with sweet bread and banana taking the back seat. Very refreshing and tasty. This is an excellent interpretation on a classic beer style.

Bottle as a killer extra thanks to dchmela. Thanks, Dave! Pours bright hazy dark golden with an orange tint. Lovely summer fruits and some apricot, apple. Funky wild yeast. Some banana and pineapple as well. Nice dry palate. Really lovely. Would love to drink this all summer long.

Aroma: Big Belgian aroma with lots of yeast esters. Very fruity in the nose also.
Appearance: Straw golden in color, hazy with a thin head.
Flavor: Nice Belgian flavor with a big alcohol taste. This had good spicy flavors added.
Palate: Dry Strong finish, with a Good Mouthfeel.
Overall: Big Belgian beer this was slightly weak from what I could tell. I felt it was a tad under fermented and needed more malts added to give it a bigger Belgian boost.

Tap. Decent beer, flavor is alright, alcohol doesn’t jump out at you but could be more enjoyable.

750 mL purchased some time ago from Bon Vivant (Batch 12, bottled June 2006). Pours pale orange with a thin white head. Funky aroma of citrus, pineapple, yeast, banana, clove, and sweetness. While very good, the taste is not as interesting as the aroma. Still, the taste is exceptional with some sweet and sour flavors detectable. Having tasted earlier bottles of this same batch I would recommend less aging than the 3 years that the side of the bottle allows. This was best at about 1 year of aging. A very good beer but of course not as interesting as the other Russian River brews.

Yellow pour with a big white head. Very crisp tasting. Aroma of yeast, citrus, and sweetness. Had a nice light fruity taste with malt and sweetness. Laced the glass nicely.
