On tap @ O’Brien’s: Poured a medium brown liquid with a slight tint of mahogany while almost no formation of head was on top. Aroma was surprisingly hoppy but I am unable to smell much else because of all the aroma of food and smoke in the atmosphere. As for the drink, a bitter bite of hops dominates the flavor while only a delicate touch of malts holds this brown ale together. Finish is grapefruit juice or lemon zest but could have easily fooled me for being some other style other than brown ale.

Draft at OBrien’s. Pours a clear brown, with a nice light tan head. Roasty, nutty, light sweetness, citrus, toast, and some fruity hops. Pretty tasty brown, well done.

Tap: brown pour with medium sized beige head. Aroma is floral hops with roast grain and a little cocoa powder. Flavor is citrusy, piney hops with a big burst of roast grain, cocoa and a touch of bitter coffee and grapefruit. Nice flavor mix and rather easy drinking beer for a 7.6 percenter.

On tap at the brewpub. Aroma is a touch muted but there are nice malt notes. There is light toffee, some burnt toast, a hint of roast and chocolate and a nice nuttiness. Only a faint dank hop aroma. Esters and alcohol is minimal. Pours a solid brown with a hint of burnt amber. Thick, light tan head with really solid retention and lacing. Flavor starts out with some sweet toffee and dark caramel. There are hints of light chocolate and roast as well. The finish has a nice nuttiness to it. There is an assertive bitterness as well, moderately high but lacking astringency. Some dank hop flavor with some grapefruit and citrus as well, but more resinous than fruity. A touch of alcohol spice in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied but smooth and creamy. Medium carbonation and low to no astringency. Low to moderate alcohol warmth. Overall one of my favorite brown ales. A balanced blend of malt and hops allowing both to shine and compliment each other. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at the brew pub, served in a tasting glass. Pours clear caramel with a moderate fine off-white head. The head remains and leaves lots of fine lace. On the nose, it is nicely hoppy with pine and plenty of citrus. There is also lots of caramel to balance. The flavour is moderately bitter-sweet, becoming slightly more bitter towards the finish. On the palate, it is medium in body with a creamy texture and soft carbonation. Overall. this is a great brown ale with an IPA-esque character. It reminds of a black IPA, but is quite a bit paler. A very well constructed brew, sophisticated with beautiful subtle hops yet surprisingly drinkable. 2011-06-09

Deep brown with mahogany on the sides. Chocolaty tan head that lingers and is full. Floral and citrus hop nose . chewy bitterness and well-rounded with strong malt profile. Slick hop resin at back of the palate. Taste lingers.

On tap at the brewery. Notes of perfume, citrus, biscuits, and medicine. Not a fan. Disjointed and not enjoyable.
