Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber color with a nice frothy, off-white head. Aromas of hops but so much more such as malts, maple syrup, and some citrus. Palate is simply amazing as the beer is perfect - smooth at the beginning with a nice slick middle finishing in a clean manner. Flavor is even better as the beer is perfectly balances between the hops and malts. Somehow Pliny manages to drink like an IPA without smacking you around with the hops. This is the perfect beer.

On tap at Stone. Summary: One of the overall best DIPA’s I’ve ever had. Balanced, flavorful, long finish, true to style.

500ml bottle from a trade with bhensonb. pours a slightly hazed orange with minimal carb and sexy lacings. a small snow white head lingers across the cap. aroma of hops, with hops and hops. the flavour is of hops, hops, and hops. one dimentional in both the flavour and aroma because of the massive hops assault. it has a perfect mouthfeel and is quite balanced across the palate. pretty damn stunning! thx bill!

Bottle kindly shared by hallinghansen. Cloudy orange body with a medium steady off white head. Very fruity and hoppy aroma. Notes of citrus, grapefruit, peach, pine and light caramel. Creamy and smooth texture. The flavour is peach, citrus, passion fruit, grapefruit, caramel and flowers. Lovely! ery balanced, tasteful and refreshing.

tap at capones, bronze colored pour with a big white head, was actually cool to have it side by side with the younger to see just how nice the color was, the balance was great..tons of hops in both the nose and the taste, some great pine tones mixed in with hay and light caramel. finish was bitter, but again balanced to not give the mouth puckering effect. awesome.

After months of searching, I was lucky enought to find a secret stash in Colorado. They were bottled 7/20/09, so very fresh. Poured into tulip glass and it has a murky, yet glowing oragnge hue. The aroma has strong hints of pine and kind. The first sip has an unforegettable bite to it. Very sticky resin like quality with the best lacing I have ever seen. This is hop-head’s dream. Simply put, the most enjoyable beer I have ever had. My freinds make fun of me for drinking IPA’s all of the time. However, I gave a Pliny to the most cirtical of beer drinking friends, without telling him it was an IPA. He could not stop talking about how delicious it is! I think Snoop Dog would call this IPA "sticky icky icky!"
