Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Bottle from South Bay Drugs and Liquor. I had always meant to taste this when I seen it on tap at local spots but just never got around to it until they bottled it. Pours a dense golden brass color with a fluffy patch of white foam. Nose is a fresh and pure serving of wet sticky green hops that are mellowed out and calm unlike some other imperial IPA’s on steroids—not that it is a bad thing to smell an overloaded double IPA. The flavor is pure fresh hops yet balanced with a background of malt and metallic aftertaste.

UPDATED: MAR 28, 2009 Pours a murky orangeish amber with a *perfect* head. Thick and pillowy with good retention. Aroma is a powerful burst of herbal hops, with a wonderful balance of malts. *Unbelievably* smooth for something at 8% with this much hops. The carbonation is there, and it’s fairly thick, but almost feels as if nothing is in your mouth but a burst of flavor. Has yeasty notes of a Belgian saison-style ale, with (obviously) plenty of hops and the malts to counter. Also notes of grapefruit and light brown sugar. Simply wonderful - a near-perfect IIPA. I cannot wait for this to hit the shelves in Seattle.

UPDATED: JAN 9, 2009 500 ml bottle from Bev4less in Santee. Pours a copper color with a big sudsy white head that leaves plenty of lacing. The aroma is on par with the best IPA’s; this one has a big green chlorophyll bouquet with pungent, pollen-loaded, lantana blooms. The taste lacks the big biter hoppy bite that I expect from an IPA. The flavor continues--smooth with mild hops, sweet cotton candy, caramel malts and biter walnuts. The mouthfeel is full and creamy. The finish clean and dry. Overall: I have waited a long time to try this beer and it is a great one. It goes down smooth and easy, perhaps the most easy drinking IIPA yet. Congrats to RR for this beauty.

Richmond Summer Gathering. 500ml bottle courtesy of cdumler. Clear gold with a small white head. Big herbal hop nose that seemed to morph into grapefruit. Soft malt flavors melded well with the herbal and citrus. A good beer, but don’t get the hype.

UPDATED: MAR 6, 2009 22oz bottle. Pours clear gold, strangely lighter than the Blind Pig. Big huge citrus notes in the nose with a lovely floral underpining. Flavor is very hoppy, not really my thing but a remarkable beer because I actually enjoyed drinking a imperial IPA. Very refreshing with perfect malt/hop/carbonation balance. Slightly caramely and with some vanilla bean notes to take some of the bite off the really piney citrus hops that dominate the first 2/3rds of the beer. Very well done. Rerate 3/5/09. Better than I remembered. Complex and lovely. The best of a style I don’t particularly care for.

500ml bottle fresh from cloudskipper. Poured deep gold in color with a thick white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus and piney hops. Tastes is of large amounts of sticky piney and citrus hops, light caramel malts, and mild spices. Very nice.
