Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Pours a darkened orange with an off-white, frothy head. Leaves sticky lacing on my snifter. Soft floral nose, grass, grapefruits, pine and weed. Flavors of lemon pith, pine resin, spring flowers, ruby red grapefruit, and semi-sweet malt. The flavors are so soft and balanced it’s hard to imagine this is a DIPA. Where is the tongue thrashing that I’ve grown accustomed to. Not bitter in the least. This is pure hops flavor at its finest. Finishes sharp with a dry piney, hoppiness. This is a smooth, creamy elixir. Body has medium density and has some yeast floaters throughout. Man this stuff is great.

50 cl bottle, Seattle, WA. Slightly hazy golden colour, very floral hop marijuana aroma. Thick mouth feel, sharp hop/alcohol bite, and a warm flowery finish that intensifies. Very nice.

Strong piney hop aroma, lemon, orange juice, and grapefruit. Pours completely transparent, dark orange and heavily carbonated. Thin white head. Very soft hop flavor, followed by a creamy orange, with a nice bitter lemon rind finish. Palate is a bit sharp upfront, but it mellows into a nice creamy finish, Creamy Creamy Creamy. How many times can I say that without it sounding gross?

Fantastic IIPA shared by xmarcnolanx. Pours hazy amber / orange with a minor soapy off-white head. The aroma has lots of danky hops, some grapefruit, green onions, garlicy and heavy smooth toasted malt. Medium smooth body that is lightly resiny with a grapefruit pith feel and gentle carbonation. The flavor starts with lots of dry full grapefruit, earthy, pine and lots of smooth rich malt. The finish is resiny, dry and hoppy. Very well made beer.

Bottle. Poured a cloudy gold color with a two finger white head. Aroma of citrus, pine and malt. Flavor is pine hops with good malt balance, with a grapefruit/citrus finish. Medium/full body with good carbonation and a oily feel in the mouth.

An absolutely splended DIPA. When describing the flavors in this beer it seems like you’re talking about the standard "by the book" IPA, but there’s just something different here, it’s just done absolutely perfect. Citrus fruits are obvious, lots of juicy hops, bitter but not the puckering type of bitter - more like a sweet juicy grapefruit and pineapple juice type of bitter. Malt profile is absolutely perfect. Amazing on the Palate, not too thick - definitely not too thin. Looks great. Nice head that does become just a frothy top, but leaves great lacing. Nice sunburst hue. There is only one problem with this beer and it has nothing to do with the beer itself, it’s the age of the beer. You have to drink this one fresh and I mean FRESH. No more then a week or two after bottling. After a couple weeks it becomes a ho-hum beer. The bottle makes it very clear that this beer needs to be drank absolutely fresh so I’m rating this beer based on a perfectly fresh one I had, rather then the... more common (unfortunately) slightly aged one you are likely to find in the stores. Try to get the freshest you can find! It really does make a world of difference with this beer.
