COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncleís legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

This was on-draft in a 16 oz glass from the Russian River Brewpub in Santa Rosa. I have heard a lot about this, so was looking forward to seeing if it lived up to its reputation. The brews were all listed in various color chalks on a board behind the bar, and according to it this one checked in at 92 BUís and 8% ABV. When it was set in front of me I could smell the hops from two feet away. This one is potent! The odor just leaps out of the glass with piney and floral hops. You donít need to take a big sniff to get what is going on here. Besides the hops, there are also some wonderful rich malts, nuts toffee, caramel, and fruit. I cannot imagine a beer smelling any better than this. As a pub pour it came without any head, but after drinking off the first inch, and almost swooning in the process, I swirled it and got a nice fat off-white head that left lots of fat chunks of lacing on the sides of the glass. A beautiful light orange, this is a feast for the eyes and as the head slowly settles down you are so taken by its overall beauty you almost hate to disturb it. The flavor is similar to the nose, and while the malts and the hops dominate, there is a serious bitter finish worthy of a DIPA. The mouthfeel was excellent, very rich and creamy and simply glides across the teeth and tongue. It tastes just as good going down the pipe as it did at first sip. The brew is simply incredible. It has that wonderful bitterness that all great DIPAs should have, and hides the alcohol very well. It is too bad this is only available on tap, because I would love to share this with my friends so they can appreciate it also. I have been saving a second 4.8 for just a brew like this. Ranks with the best beer I have every had the pleasure of drinking. Maybe Pliny the Younger will be that perfect 5.0 if I ever get to taste it

Rating from memory. On tap upstairs at the Brickskeller, D.C. Having been supping on fresh hop brews, I wasnít prepared to be as knocked over by this as I was. Wow, a rich and fresh IIPA on a par with the mighty Ruination. Not sweet and cloying, but definitely some tasteful bready malts in there, this one comes on all citrus and grass but has a long, well balanced finish. Awesome.

Cloudy Orange with Dark Brown/Red Hue and White Ring. Heavy Citrusy and Piney Hops on the Nose. Noticeably a Bit of Syrupy Potentcy About it. Very Well Balanced Imperial. Hops Are Huge and Tasty but Wonderfully Held in Check, Making This a Wonderful All Around Brew. Instead of Being Hop Water the Sweet Maltiness Allows You to Fully Explore The Citrusy Hops As They Roll Around Your Mouth. Outstanding.

Draught. Pours a cloudy orange-copper body with a small white head. The aroma has a ludicrous dimenson of hops - grapefruit and oranges dominate but the biscuity sweet cereal is also worth noting. Super palatable and decidingly hoppy. Dense body with evident sweetness to counteract the leafy, piney hops. As I suspected, this turned out to be amazing! Enjoyed a first pint at Hollingshead Deli on March 22, 2007.

Hand-bottled courtesy of madsberg/mwsf. Gingery orange colour. Huge pine forest aroma, with massive resinous hops, grapefruit and orange zest in the flavour. But thereís a decent underlying soft malt presence that keeps the whole thing in balance and maintains supple, yet firm mouthfeel. Thereís plenty of bitterness there but it is neither harsh, nor grating and is not too dominant. Sure its a hop monster, but its assertive, rather than aggressive. Just the way it should be. This should be required study for all brewers wanting t make a DIPA. Superb. And Iím guessing it could be better on draught.

Amber color. Smell of hops, malt, pine, grapefruit, apricots, caramel, sugar, honey, grass and flowers. Tastes the same but also with some toffee, spice and orange zest. What a brew. Thanks brewblackhole!

Draft at the brewpub. Poured a clear golden color. Head was thin, white, and left only a bit of lace on the glass. Pleasant grapefruity aroma with some pine resin. Distinct malty caramel flavor which was more pronounced than it was in the RR IPA and Blind Pig IPA, but was still overshadowed by the citrusy hops. The alcohol was well disguised and the hop bitterness was on the high end of the spectrum. Very good.

Draught @ the brewery. Jeez, this was good. Extremely well composed for an imperial/double IPA. Very bitter and rich; made me salivate while drinking it. Best beer I had all night there. Great stuff.

drafts at liarís club and pizza port carlsbad. the former gave me the wrong beer since it was super farhouse style. i wish i knew what that was because it was awesome. i had this actual beer at PP and it was a pretty good DIPA. the most balanced of the 3 DIPAís me and my friends had gotten then. strong malt presence in spit of a ton of hops. ipaís are a dime a dozen and they all taste the same. i donít
