Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Pours a golden, slightly rosey color with thick whitish head. Aroma is vibrant with citrus and floral hoppiness and a slight earthiness. Flavor is nearly untouchable, simply bursting with resinous citrus and floral hoppiness. I’ve never experienced a beer with a larger number of flavors within its hop profile. It just seems to change from the first drop to minutes after the last gulp. Unreal.

Bottle. Poured a clear light golden color with a thick white head. Aroma is near perfect hops very floral and earthy. Wow this is everything I want and expect from a west coast IPA. Powerfull hop presence without being overwhelming balances nicely with it’s caramel malt base. Dry slightly bitter finish. Excellent.

On tap. The best it can get when it comes to IPA aroma and taste. If it is on tap at a bar you are at and do not order this beer, there is something wrong with you.

Bottle (in NZ). A dark gold pour with a think creamy white head. The big hop aroma exploded from the moment I opened the bottle - citrus, citrus and more citrus - but pine and grass also, and a touch of chocolate from the malt. Drinking it, the palate is so smooth, despite the hop bitterness. At first you get all that piney and citrusy flavour - getting more of the malt in the swallow - and even in the finish, which has peppery hops but surprisingly not too bitter. And a lovely warmness to remember it by. Brilliantly done.

smells like hops after you open the package, amazing chinook, centennial they are all there. pours very thin was thinking this would be heavier. i mu st say the smell is the most amazing aroma of any beer i’ve had. the flavors are all hops and i like it, not too sweet with almost a wet hop flavor, amazing.

Tasted 30/04/2009. 500ml bottle from Beerstore. It’s all been said already. Fantastic balance of malt, hop flavour and bitterness. The gold standard American IPA and I can see why (I wouldn’t call it a DIPA). Pour carefully. Much better without the yeast... bitterness becomes a shade too high with the yeast in there.
