Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

First of all the aromas are almost overwhelming. I could just smell this golden elixer all day. Maybe Russian River should come out with Pliny cologne. Anyway I digress, awesome aromas of citrusy piney hops. To match we have citrusy piney flavors that caress the tastebuds. Overall an awesome awesome DIPA!

Bottle. Feb. 3rd, 2009 date. Pours a glowing golden orange color with a big foamy white head that shows great retention. Sheets of sudsy lacing coat the glass. The aroma is very nice of orange and grapefruit hops with some lemon zest over a sweet, pale malt backbone. The flavor follows with the citrus and resiny piney hops pushing forward with subtle orange and lemon flavor. The toasted caramel malt lends a nice balance, but doesn’t overpower the hops. This one is not overly complex, but straight forward and well blended. Medium bodied and fairly smooth and easy to drink with a solid hop bitterness on the finish. The hops had started to fade already, but this would be great ultra fresh. Really nice IIPA.

On tap at Capone’s. I guess I don’t get the excitement about this one? Was very dry/biting for me, wasn’t much of a fan.

Bottle. Dark golden colour with a white head. Aroma: Floral & citric hops, clementine, peach, citrus, grass, cream. Taste: Hoppy, fruity & juicy. Notes of grass, clementine, peaches, a bit salty, grape (in the finish). Not very sweet or malty, but more on the dry side. The alcohol is well hidden.

Tap at Toranado: I’ve had this a number of times, but never rated it due to the fact that I had not enjoyed it as much as I thought I potentially could. Then I had it as fresh as can be in San Francisco, so I figured it was time. Rich golden pour with a dense white lacing head. This stuff has nothing but super alpha acid hops in it. It’s so hoppy that the aroma is all vegetal- basil, oregano, pure hop oils, lots and lots of myrcene. Creamy body with an extreme hops flavor (surprise). Hop insanity, no malt nuance. Resiny, piny, oregano, basil, all vegetal, hempy, bombarded with myrcene. This stuff lacks the finesse and fruitiness of PTY. If you’re a beer guy that’s stuck in the "hop phase," then this is your holy grail.

Courtesy of Bov. Mindblowingly pleasant aroma with a huge amount of hop resin showing up. Hints of grapefruit, pine needles, mango and pineapple. A lot of dry hop. Flavor and palate: Good bitterness. Perfectly balanced. Extremely subtle. Overall impression: Great. Thanks a lot Bov!

Color has a brass hue. Sediment very visible. Nose of grape fruit and apple. Biting pine bitterness on first contact with the tongue dissipating into floral hops. Not overly sweet. As a result, the palate is not syrupy as most other Imperial IPAs I’ve had, e.g. Stone Ruination. Overall: Excellent IPA. Reminiscent of Frank’s Double IPA at Pizza Port Carlsbad, which I regard as the best.
