Deep honey.golden color, small white head. Strong fruity pineapple-apricot hoppy aroma, some cat piss effect. Straightforward grassy, a bit fruity hoppy flavor. Malt profile is "easy to drink", leaning more to hoppyness than maltyness. Very long citric aftertaste. This is a good beer, but I was waiting for more (average 4.2). Bottle was one year old, maybe needs really fresh sample.
GreggG (19), Spokane, Washington, USA Apr 7, 2009 500 mL bottle dated Feb 3, 2009. A succulent citrus aroma bursts out of the bottle as soon as the cap is cracked. Pours a bright honey-gold color with a thin white head. Small bubbles can clearly be seen effervescing off the bottom of the glass. The aroma is all about juicy hops with grapefruit, pineapple, pine resin, and hints of grass.
The flavor is amazingly well balanced. The hops are prominent, of course, with an initial sweetness that is unexpected. That’s followed by a substantial bitterness that clings to the inside of the cheeks and then pleasantly subsides. All of the flavors are in harmony - making this a truly exceptional beer. Fantastic! thewolf (5662), Kolding, Denmark Apr 7, 2009 Bottle, bought @ Cracked Kettle, Amsterdam.
Pours great, clear golden with a beautiful, creamy, white head. Impressive duration and wonderful lacings. This is one, good-looking beer. Aroma is pure hops oils. Lots of pine, grapefruit, grass and a bit of bready malts. Flavour is really balanced, never too much in any direction. There is no sign of the 8 % ABV. The hops are balanced, very dry, but balanced by caramel and bready malts. The aftertaste lasts until after Easter 2167 with a wonderful hoppy dryness. Holy shit, this is a very deserved top beer.Incredibly well-balanced. This is almost like Mikkeller DIPA, just more balanced because of the lower ABV. yobdoog (1426), Woodridge NY, New York, USA Apr 7, 2009 Very balanced and drinkable IPA. Lots of juicy hops. A nice malt balance but not sweet. Hops don’t linger which is a plus for me. Very good. Ethereal (1500), London, Greater London, England Apr 6, 2009 On tap at Toronado, San Francisco, with Phyllis, 24th Mar 09. Clear amber with a lacy white head. Lots of varied hop flavours - citrus, grass in particular - but restrained and smooth as it goes down. A lovely hoppy beer. jeff789 (359), Pennsylvania, USA Apr 6, 2009 Super fresh bottle... Very floral aroma, very citrusy... Incredible looking beer, top notch, what an ipa should look like... The flavor is grapefruit all the way with enough malt and enough grassy hops to keep it in balance... Part of me feels as though there should be three catagories of IPA with the majority of IPA’s that are between 7 and 8.5% included together, this is may more like a 7% IPA in taste profile than a 9% double IPA... beerandIT (177), Richmond, Virginia, USA Apr 5, 2009 Balance, balance and more balance. Beautiful floral hop scent. Damn amazing double ipa. Hops and more hops but so damn balanced, yes I said it four times already get over it; and just does what it is supposed to. Laces the glass as though it was nectar from heaven. Wonderful gold color, just gorgeous. Aftertaste is strong in the way a double ipa should be but backs off so as to not overpower. My current favorite double ipa. j12601 (1151), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA Apr 5, 2009 Bottle from BlackForestCO with a big huge pile of thanks for this one. Bottle is dated as being bottled on 03.09.09, so less than a month on this one. Pours a hazy golden amber with a thick beiged out head which leaves an ample amount of lacing on the sides. Smells of piles of hops, with clear pines and citrus notes, and even a hint of hay and grass, and maybe even a touch of candied pineapple. Medium bodied with a nice fine carbonation. Sweet, but not a big sugar bomb as some double ipas have a tendancy to be. Large quinine and grapefruit bitterness at the end that changes a little as it lingers. Fantastic beer and a big thanks to Jake for sending this my way.
