Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Super fresh bottle... Very floral aroma, very citrusy... Incredible looking beer, top notch, what an ipa should look like... The flavor is grapefruit all the way with enough malt and enough grassy hops to keep it in balance... Part of me feels as though there should be three catagories of IPA with the majority of IPA’s that are between 7 and 8.5% included together, this is may more like a 7% IPA in taste profile than a 9% double IPA...

Balance, balance and more balance. Beautiful floral hop scent. Damn amazing double ipa. Hops and more hops but so damn balanced, yes I said it four times already get over it; and just does what it is supposed to. Laces the glass as though it was nectar from heaven. Wonderful gold color, just gorgeous. Aftertaste is strong in the way a double ipa should be but backs off so as to not overpower. My current favorite double ipa.

Bottle from BlackForestCO with a big huge pile of thanks for this one. Bottle is dated as being bottled on 03.09.09, so less than a month on this one. Pours a hazy golden amber with a thick beiged out head which leaves an ample amount of lacing on the sides. Smells of piles of hops, with clear pines and citrus notes, and even a hint of hay and grass, and maybe even a touch of candied pineapple. Medium bodied with a nice fine carbonation. Sweet, but not a big sugar bomb as some double ipas have a tendancy to be. Large quinine and grapefruit bitterness at the end that changes a little as it lingers. Fantastic beer and a big thanks to Jake for sending this my way.

Man oh man... this is it. Sampled blind next to Hop 15, and there’s just no comparison. The incredibly hoppy, yet balanced with a really crisp, and not too-high gravity malt makes this an extraordinary beer. Delicious grassy nose, lots of pineapple bitterness with some really fantastic undercurrents. Makes me rethink the West Coast IPA.

Pours a fairly cloudy orange with a big white head. Big, bitter hop flavor. Lots of grapefruit and other juicy goodness into a very dry finish. Very glad to have had the chance to try this.

Bottled Hazy golden with a medium, white head. Loads of grassy hoppiness in the aroma. High bitterness. Fresh and sursprisingly light. Elder-berries and notes of tea.

Pours a hazy orange with medium white head. Aroma of hops, mostly citrus, hints of fruit. Taste is similar with extra hints of spices and pine. Bitterness is up front, but finishes in a very pleasant manner. just a wonderful all around IIPA.

Man, I gotta tell you, I fell in love with this straight away. Pours golden tinged with orange and hazy. Pretty thin, lacing, white head. A wonderful aroma of tropical fruit mix, mango, peach, loads of pineapple, and a nice, intense presence of bitter hops. Astonishingly rounded, fruity, crispy, hoppy taste hit your palate hard. Aftertaste of bitter, spicy, peachy hops is just amazing, it lasts and lasts for ages. All this is supported with a perfectly balanced malt base and soft carbonation. I really had some hard time finishing this, since I knew that it would end. More of this and a lot.
