Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Bottle (1.23.09), nice sweet caramel aroma with pine and citrus hop notes. Very smooth and with piney hop taste that has a strong caramel malt compliment. I was expecting and hoping for the hops to be all up in your grill. They are subtle maybe because I had a beer before. Nevertheless you can taste the quality.

(03.15.09) 500 mL bottle. Thanks CaryTheDude! Golden-orange pour with slight haze & a large, fluffy white head. Some lacing. The nose is sweet hops - grapefruit + floral deliciousness - with some malt backbone. Hop aroma is somewhat resinous as well. It’s a little lighter than it might be in the mouth, but still very tasty, hops & malt are both present though it leans hopward. A+ beer. RR have accomplished something here that belongs in the rare air with Hopslam & Dreadnaught.

Bottle thanks to the mashmaster! Aroma has notes of grapefruit, citrus and tropical fruits and sweet caramel malts. Hazy medium orange hue with a large off-white head that left great lace. Flavor is sweet and crisp with a nice bitter finish. Palate is medium bodied and oily soft. Very good and fruity aroma. So incredible well done. I wanted to hate this beer for it’s stupid ass label but my god is this beer beautiful. I don’t think a IIPA can actually get any better than this.

I’m very partial to IPAs and on a recent visit to Santa Rosa, I downed a couple pints. Amongst the world’s best.

2009 Bottle - 1 month old - Pours a lt orange with a lasing off white head...aroma is amazing, pineapple, pine, grapefruit and caramel, melon...flavour is big and bold, mineraly, dry hop bitterness on the front end that meets a clean maltiness in the middle, and finishes beautifully...hoppy with enought malt to be balanced, but far from cloying...the driest DIPA I’ve had, and a welcome change form the malt-bomb hop-bomb formula...sweetness...

Bottle (50 cl), thanks larsniclas. Cloudy golden, medium white head. Hoppy aroma with notes of elderberries, sauvignion blanc wine, and black currants, on top of a slightly earthy malt base. Medium bodied and very smooth. Nice long bitter finish. Wonderful beer.
