Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Big pine needle hoppy aroma, very floral, fresh and big. Taste is very resiny but also lovely dry and refreshing. Caramel balances it out nicely. The alcohol and the overpowering sensation of it all makes me feel a bit woozy but this is a terrific beer, almost worth all the hype.

Sampled at Vintner Wine Market, thanks to gottalottaibu. Golden-amber with a small lasting disc of bubbles. Big aroma of grapefruit, resin and catspray. Flavor is big grapefruit and resin, with some nice backing caramel. Light medium body is slightly watery, tingly and lightly carbonated.

Bottle from joint trade with markwise. Pours a hazy caramel golden color with a one finger white head that settles slowly. Aroma is sweet and floral with notes of citrus, honey, floral hops, grapefruit, pine, malt. Flavor is sweet and malty with notes of honey, caramel, grapefruit, floral hops, citrus, pine, and hints of ripe fruit. Generally medium body with a bitter hop finish.

500 ml bottle. Pours a clear orange amber color with a small fine white head. The aroma upon opening the bottle was inviting: caramel and toffee melded with a bevy of fruits (citrus, grapefruit, pineapple,), pine and floral notes. The flavor balances nicely between the moderately sweet caramel maltiness and the bitterness of the hops; pine, floral, and resiny. I don’t get much in the way of alcohol, probably because the aroma and flavor are too distracting. This is an excellent beer. Medium-full bodied and super easy to drink. I can’t wait to try this on tap someday.

[Bottle] brought back from S.D. and split with my dad. Pours a crystal clear orangey amber with a soapy, fluffy off white head. Aroma is packed with grapefruit and sweet caramel malt. Flavor reminds me of hopslam without the honey, which lends itself to a less sweet, more dry beer. There is some grassiness in there too. Ends with a nice lingering bitterness.

Bottle shared with MatSciGuy. This one was fresh - bottled on 2/3/09. Pours a crystal clear amber tone with a one-finger head. Outspoken, fresh citrusy hop aroma. A big beer with a huge hop flavor some grapefruit, orange spritz with a dry bracing bitterness that hangs around a bit. Very good - well balanced and not too sweet which is one of the things that I don’t like about some double IPAs

First off, this beer looks great. Clear orange, nice. It smells seriously hoppy and tastes very hoppy, bitter and piney but is not overdone. It is super hoppy without being tacky about it. It has a slight dryness to it but doesn’t seem astringent. The label is entertaining and I have to agree with the sentiment... update 11/04/08 bottle date Smell is awesome, resin, pine, hop essence. Taste is every good as bit as I remembered from the last one I had a month or two ago. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 08-21-2008 03:15:53

Draft @ Monk’s: Poured an amber color with not much head. The aroma was grapefruit, pine and hops. The flavor was pine, lots of hops, grapefruit, and bitters. Overall, a well balanced, not overly spicy, smooth finish on the tongue DIPA. One of the best I’ve had.
