COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

14 days old bottle, august 27th 2015. Finally got the chance to have a Pliny, I was wondering if it could justify the hype, after all it’s a double ipa, a style there is released about one zillion new brews of each day. This is supposed to be one of the kings on the hill. The fruity hop aroma works well with the crisp malt. Fruitness is dominating with strong tropical notes, flowers, resin. Taste has a nod of sweet malt, mostly hop driven as well. Bitterness comes through easily, making a dry and crisp yet fruity beer. Little to suggest this is a strong double as the malt and sweetness is hidden away behind the hops here. Zesty and full of resin I conclude the hype is more or less justified.

Popped into the Russian River Brew Pub in Santa Rosa on a trip to northern California. One of these led to a couple more plus the purchase of a growler and a case of bottles. This is the holy grail of IPAs. It is arguably the best IIPA I’ve ever had. A rich goldern color with a lovely frothy white head that lasts to the bottom of the glass. A hoppy aroma with notes of citrus, pine and an ideal amount of malt, citrus-y with a perfect balance of hops and malt. Delicious!

Bottle dated 4/26/16. Pour is clear golden with a nice fluffy head. Aroma is quite delicious: peach, mango, pine, grapefruit, mild sweetness, really nice. Lots of bitterness on the tongue, but that pine and grapefruit make a strong showing as well. Dry finish, a gem of a West coast IPA.

510 ml (?!) bottle bought in Mill Valley, CA. Clear dark golden in the glass, mid size white head. Very fruity in the nose. Taste starts smooth, fruity, malty, followed by a more floral hopy sequence. Nearly creamy texture. Nice not too bitter aftertaste. Enjoyed it!

Draft at RR. Peach, mango, grapefruit with a dank soapy sweetness. So well balanced. Tastes like fresh weed smells (more so than any other IPA). Every time I think maybe this is maybe slightly overhyped I am proven wrong. This is so, so good. Blind Pig is nearly as amazing but this is still the gold standard.

On draft at the brewpub, massive piney aroma, floral, resin. Nice amber, orange colour. Head fades quickly. A lot of bitterness on the back end. Really good stuff.

finally... bottle shared by a friend. had this one after blind pig. poured a deep dark golden colour with a white head. nose of crisp malts, caramel, slight bitter pine notes, hops, harsh, citrus, grapefruit, and dried fruit. taste is a bit harsh, sticky, and bitter. a world class west coast ipa, but i prefered the blind pig over this one

UPDATED: MAY 4, 2016 From a pint bottle. Tried to get hands on this for over a year. Pours clear golden with substantial head. Smell is fantastic with nice big piney and citrus. Drinks heavy pine with less citrus similar with finish. It is very balanced for a 8 percent beer. Very solid one, although didnt blow me away after searching for almost a year to have this one. More I drink of it more Iike it.

Big thanks to my co worker for bringing this one back from CA to IN. 13 days in the bottle when I popped the cap. Wonderful aroma. Juicy hops. Exactly what you want from a big IPA. A blend of citrus and tropical. Flavor is dense with hop deliciousness. It’s moderately bitter, touch of sweetness. Not sticky or overly so at all. I could do with more bitter, less sweet but it’s a beer I would buy all the time if I could. Love it.

Gold, clear, white fluffy head. Aroma of pine, fresh hop cones, tropical fruit. Taste- drinks easy for a 2XIPA. Very well balanced, these are the two things that I notice first. As far as flavors go, can't say it blows me away but no question it's well crafted. Like the aroma, you get the pine and light tropical fruit and something like rosemary and thyme, herbal flavors. Improves with every sip. Not the best I've had but very nice! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
