Bottle Date: 10/4/11
A: Golden Straw/Orangish Hue, Passes Most Light, White Head, Some Lacing
S: Semi Grainy Malts
T: Semi Grainy Malts
M: Decent Carbonation, Light to Medium Bodied, Mildly Sweet
Overall, definitely an absence of hops...the hue was definitely darker and the malt character much more prominent.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle from City Beer Store, San Francisco - a (much cherished) present from my girlfriend. Pours an amber gold, with a lovely lasting white bubbly head. Aroma is huge and interesting - lots of citrus, grapefruit, spicy and floral hop notes, with equally prominent caramel and biscuit aromas, and a more bizarre but intriguing hint of marshmallow. Taste is the absolutely perfect blend of malty sweetness and hoppy bitterness, with a lightly spicy undertone and the vaguest of hints of seaside and salt. Dry and balanced bitter finish that lasts and lasts and lasts - it still stuck on my palate an hour later. Smooth and even carbonation. Almost as good as beer gets, to be honest. I wish I could get my hands on this more often.

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
My second Pliny, but first since 2009 and first full review. This bottle is courtesy of Eduardo.
Pliny looks amazing. A perfect yellow/amber/pale orange color with half an inch of white bubbly head. It has fantastic lacing as well. Sticky globules that hang onto the sides of the tulip. Aroma is wonderful too. Very floral and sweet. I love the hop balance. Lots of orange scents, with maybe a touch of lemon zest. Very floral, reminds me of this tiny yellow flower that grows here in FL. It also has the faintest hint of pine, which I normally donít like, but seems to be done really well in this beer. But where this beer shines is really in the taste. It reminds me of Six Pointís Bengali Tiger. Well balanced, hoppy/sweet combo and delicious. Pliny somehow takes this all up a notch! Everything I get from the nose, is doubled on my tongue, and in the best of ways. There is also the slightest of biscuity flavor too. Mouthfeel is simple, bubbly, very lightly creamy, and the hops do not attack my taste buds. I love this about Pliny. Most IPAs will sting your tongue with the aggressive hops. Also, this beer hides the 8% ABV extremely well; not as well as Compass from ST, but very very well. It drinks like a great single IPA.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Decently fresh. Nose full if pine and trees. Slightly minty. Much citrus too. Very multidimensional. Very clear orange. Large white head. Taste is like orange with a touch of lemon. Moderate residual sweetness. Solid. Would prefer it a touch drier. Otherwise great b

FROM NOTES: July 1, í12
Poured into a RR pint glass at the Russian River Pub. Fairly amazing beer. Even with all of the hype, it did not disappoint. The epitome of what I like to call the California Hop-Nazi style. It is a quintessential DIPA. Lots of full hoppy, citrusy aroma and flavor. It had a big enough malt backbone to balance out the hop ridiculous character. It was crisp, dry, refreshing, and addictive. I had several on tap at Russian River while waiting for the 2012 Tour of California finish, including having to slam one in an effort to race over to the finish line. I do NOT recommend disrespecting this beer, or your stomach, by slamming it down. While I generally prefer beers with less hops, I was stunned at the balance of this hop-monster. You need to try it, the hype isnít just hype. Now the details:
A: Big tropical notes with floral undertones. Sexy beer.
A: Pours a golden color with a one finger head that left some nice carbonation after dissipating.
T: Sweet Baby Jesus! Great balance for a DIPA. Big hop flavor right off, but as it opens up, grapefruit notes appear that add another interesting dimension to the beer. Fantastic malt after taste which really helps make this beer taste great and sets it apart from other DIPAs.
P: Modestly carbonated, very tasty and very drinkable.
O: Not much more to be said than my opening about this beer, but clearly TOP 2 DIPA/IIPA Iíve ever had. Itís nice for something this hyped to actually live up to itís reputation and following! Beg, borrow, steal, commit treason -- do what is necessary to try this beer!

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
(Aug. 2013, draft at Toronado and bottle various places, SF) One of my favorites, of not the favorite, in the pale ale department. Pours slightly hazy, golden like a hayfield on a summers day. Aroma is like a "best of hops"; sharp apricot, peach, pineapple, green and herbal, spicy and piny, a fair amount of sticky marijuana, super fresh. Taste is dry, super fruity hops, how your brain would reconstruct an IPA in a dream, just super crisp and loads of hash and hops. One of the best things about this beer is that you always get it fresh, so itís bound to always be good. A timeless classic for sure!

One of the best double IPAs out there. Smooth. Light. Little to no bitterness at the end. Highly drinkable. A lot like Flying Fish Exit 16.
