Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Bottle from Zitzke. Haven't had this in 6 years or so. Nose is clean hop and grain. Crisp and dry with good hop burst. Hop isn't too acrid and although no real sweetness to cushion it, the bitterness is muted enough to feel like part of the mix. Good. Real good sir.

Waited a long time for this one. I expect much more from this is one. Quickly disappearing head and a lighter Color than I expected.

Imperial IPA’s are always too fulsome for me, the cara malts take over and a diacetyl/eggy nose ends up making it too much for me... Untill i drank a Pliny. bottle is 2,5months old. Superb hoppy aroma, slightly caramel and a bit of alcohol. Taste is the same, incredible mouthfeel, very soft. A very nice long bitter aftertaste. Sweet but not too sweet, hoppy but not overhopped and a nice alcoholic feel. Damn. I understand why this is world’s best impIPA... How can one go back to the regular stuff after this!

12 oz pour from chilled tap into a nonic pint glass at Russian River’s restaraunt and tap house. It took 40 minutes to get in the door, but it was worth it. Golden and clear with a fluffy white head and aggressive and enjoyable carbonation. Nose is citrus, pine, and flowers. Body is full and creamy with a crisp finish. Taste starts with a blast of citrus, then some pine, then a lot of hops bitterness and some tropical fruit. Leaves pine and tangerine on the tongue with a plesant lingering bitterness. Nice sweet malty backbone behind everything. Lots of complexity and lots of layers. A whole bunch of hops tastes. Definitely one of the best imperial IPA’s I’ve had, though I wouldn’t say the best outright.

Thanks to Drew and Priority Mail - Brew date 4/21/15- Pours a nice light gold/yellow with a big white head. Nice piney and floral aroma. Hoppy, mild bitterness , well balanced. This is a nice easy beer to drink. maybe a little over rated by some but I would defiantly drink this again anytime I had the opportunity.

Tap at the brewery with commonshawn, rosskyle, and wildcard. Beer #2 at a seriously awesome brewery. Pint glass. Lighter in color than anticipated with gold and orange starring. Minor white head with great lacing. Grapefruit on the nose...very refreshing. Another nearly perfect beer. Bitterness offset by a sweetness and alcohol presence. Aftertaste has pine and resin but perfectly resides in the mouth. (I don’t even know what that means but it’s a good thing) Highly recommended.

Tap at brewery with commonmac and rosskyle and wildcard. Dark gold with white head. Very hoppy clean nose. Perfect balance of hop and sweet and alcohol. Some citrus pine resin. Very clean. Basically the perfect double ipa.

Many thanks to Werckmeister for this bottle! Bottles 27.02.15. Very floral in the nose. Leaves, Grapefruit. Fresh and smooth beginning. Sweetish fresh body. Very smooth. The sweetish body is a bit too hich, but the hops are great piney and floral. Fresh, nice bittered. smooth. Sweetish-bitter aftertaste. Fresh. Great brew but not too exceptional!
