COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Pours a nice clear golden color with white head. Pine, grapefruit, citrus, and some spruce on the nose; follows onto the palate. Not bad, but overhyped.

UPDATED: JUN 16, 2014 Keg at Russian River’s Brewery Tap, Santa Rosa, CA. Amazing grapefruit smell with strong tropical fruits. Could smell it the second it was served to me! Taste is beautifully fruity, plenty of grapefruit, mango, tropical fruits, bit of lemon and lime with some malt. Amazing nicely balanced bitter finish. This was the highlight of my trip to Sonoma County and it did not disappoint one bit. Just incredible and the pinnacle of brewing excellence.

Instantly fills the room with its incredible smell. Pours with a beautiful golden color. First taste is so crisp with hops fruits and malts. Finishes with such a nice sweet flavor. All I can say is AMAZING

Tasted from draft. Pours a clear gold with white head. Aroma is floral, pine and resin hops. Some mild floral notes. Taste is incredibly smooth. Goes down way too easy. Nice clean bitterness balanced by a very nice malt backbone. One of the most balanced IPAs I've ever had. Pine, floral, caramel, grapefruit taste. Excellent beer. Definitely one of the best. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

if you can get your hands on it, one of the most enjoyable IPAs you could ask for. pours a slightly hazy amber with a fast-dissapearing head. nose offers balanced notes of citrus, hops, and some pine. tastes of citrus on the front end followed by a mouthful of gloriously bitter hops...which will linger till your next sip. awesome!

A: Pours a light amber hue with minimal head and thin lacing, very clean and clear A: piney, citrusy American hop notes, but not intense. Faint biscuit aromas from the underlying malt profile T: light bitterness up front with plenty of citrus hop flavors, grapefruit, maybe a little mango or pineapple, not as piney as I thought it would be; the beer is light without tasting watery, medium length, bitter but not too bitter finish. as it warms up, bitterness and hop flavors dissipate slightly to reveal a slightly sweet, biscuity malt profile. Overall, very easy on the palate for an imperial/double IPA. M: overall very light, not overbearing. Smooth carbonation O: Lives up to the hype, and at less that $6 a bottle you really can’t beat it

Pliney is a benchmark IPA, clean with a crisp fermentation profile, on the bitter side, does not have the hit you in your face hop character as other popular ipas

Wonderful IPA. Huge grapefruit with apple, apricot and light floral hints. Pours golden with good head and lacing. Finishes very bitter. Pine and mint elements here as well. Tap at monks cafe.
