Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Thanks for the bottle share Jon. Pours a clear golden orange with a small off-white head. Grapefruit and citrus notes on the nose with some light grain and caramel. Medium body with a nice fresh, citrus character and good balance between malt and hops. Bitter finish with some light pine that lingers.

Bottle shared with jheath99.I’ve waited for years to get my hands on Pliny the Elder and now my beer goal has been achieved! Pours transparent gold with frothy white head. Aroma of citrus, pine and grassy notes. Tastes very strongly of bitter hops, citrus, pine and floral notes. Bitter hoppy aftertaste. It’s the perfect IPA. Excellent beer

Aromat intensywny, chmielowy, dużo nut zielonych, trawiastych i tytoniowych. Piwo jest zaskakująco lekkie w smaku i wytrawne, goryczka średnio-wysoka, fajnie zbalansowana i niezalegająca. W tle lekkie nuty alkoholowe. Pozostawia tytoniowy posmak w ustach.

0.51 l bottle from Firma Bier, bottled in September 2015. Clear, golden orange with a medium large, creamy, almost stable, white head. Sweetish, fruity-floral aroma of passion fruit, mango, orange, honey and some pine. Sweetish, fruity-resiny taste of passion fruit, mango, orange and pine, accompanied by notes of honey and caramel. Rather long, medium bitter and grapefruity finish. Medium to full body, very creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Overall with a massive malty backbone and a balancing, punchy hop bite. Lovely on the palate, super-fruity and juicy as well. Very good!

Bottle at tasting, one month after bottling date. Golden pour. Fresh aroma of citrus, pine, grain and some caramel. Hoppy fresh taste, with lots of citrus, mild peach, pine, grassy herbs, mild cara and a dry finish. Good dipa.

From Bottle. Golden in color, excellent lacing. Rush of citrus and pine at the start, light ale flavor mid palate filled by little bitter rush. This is a great Imperial IPA, part of my love of it is the hype it bares within the community. And further I feel my rating is also biased because of its scarcity, but I have yet to find its equal in style at any local american store in a bomber.

Sometimes you are just lucky. A more fresh Pliny than this one is hard to find in this side of the world. Bottled just 2 weeks ago and arrived in Sweden for me to enjoy. And I did. Aroma is sweet malty with grapefruit and pine needles. Taste is grassy, piney and yet with a balanced sweetness towards the bitterness. It’s hard not to give this a top rating, and if I didn’t, I would just be another hipster who wants to be different. Excellent Imperial IPA this one, even if there are several that are more easy to find.
