Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Simcoe to the face and a slight malt backbone come from this crystal clear pale golden brew with little white head around the edges of the glass. The flavor at first is sweet then bitter with a grassy note and creamy finish. This full bodied brew offers a good balance between malt and bitter with a nice finish of hop flavor.

Undoubtedly one of the top beers out there, or at least one of the top beers that I have had. The taste is top notch and mouth feel makes wonder what’s that water all about in the Russian River Valley

Bottle with massive thanks to Cloin! (Bottled 210116 in correct uk format) - Amber pour with white head. Aroma and taste is sweet malty and fruity, with some pleasing tropical grapefruit and peachy notes, splash of citrus across the palate, big solid caramel malty backbone, very easy drinking for the abv, overall as a massive DIPA fanboy this scores very highly, but falls "just" short of heady which I have also had recently, but this is still a real show stopper. Gorgeous!

Pours a deep dark orangish amber color. Aromas of big hop action, sweet malts, and more hops. Flavor has some bready maltsy tastes with nice grapefruit and floral hop taste. This is one hoppy sumbitch.

Finally got to try this one! Bottle poured into a tulip glass. Medium off-white head that slowly dissipates. Amazing aroma of pineapple, mango, citrus, and earth. Ahhh the hops! This brew assaults your palate with citrusy piney hops and ends with a smooth finish and almost no hint of alcohol. It was a bit more bitter than Stone’s Enjoy By IPA to me, and that’s why the taste does not get a 10. A truly great double IPA. Check it off the bucket list.

Pliney the Elder, need I say more...yes. Floral aromas. The Pliney flavor is so unique, water, yeast strain, etc. Strong hop structure. One of a kind taste. Drink it any time you can get it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours ember. With a little head foamy head. Hoppy nose with a bit of citrus. A little thicker mouth feel. Leads with a bit of molasses and finish with mild hop bitter. Very smooth. Very good very well balanced.

Lived up to all the hype!!! Scored a 3 week old bottle. Very smooth yet still punches like a 80 IBU beer. Abv was almost not noticeable for a imperial. Loved every sip. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
