502Flavors (617), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Jan 24, 2009 On tap at Father’s office in LA. Originally rater 4.2, bumped to 4.6. Grapefruit juicy hops on the nose. Great complimenting malt character to balance it out on the nose and flavor. Not too abrasive like many IIPAs. ONe of the best in its style no double. Very dangerously drinkable, sould have this all night. The flavor is more astringent than the aroma but still great. Biergeliebter (6), Kansas City, Missouri, USA does not count Jan 24, 2009 Golden yellow to copper color with creamy white head. Great lacing. Powerful hop flavor with pine and floral scents. Very simple and nearly perfect. BitchesBrew (710), Berkeley, California, USA Jan 23, 2009 [bottle] Hazy golden yellow color. Pungent pine and citrus aroma. Flavors are full of hop power of all sorts- grapefruit, lemon, peach, pine. Really quite an impressive hop mix, with very little malt coming through (but that’s OK with me). Finishes quite dry, with a really long-lasting bitterness on the palate. Soonah (900), Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA Jan 23, 2009 From BMan1113VR via trade. The pour was a slightly hazy golden/copper color with a dense, creamy white head that produces great lacing. The aroma was rich pine hops, light floral, fresh citrus (orange and grapefruit) and just a touch of malt. The flavor was dominated by the pine hops with the floral, citrus and malt all coming through nicely. Insanely drinkable. This beer had a certain simplicity and purity to it that I just loved. leeburg (146), Juneau, Alaska, USA Jan 22, 2009 Updated: Mar 11, 2009Bottle, served around 55 to 60 degrees. Murky/cloudy yellow-to-amber (depending on lighting), white fluffy head with good retention and lacing. Crushed pine needles and grapefruit peel and orange rind. Huge hop aroma. The extra malt really comes through on the initial flavor, followed by rich pine and citrus interactions. Insanely drinkable. Prefer it to its stronger, Younger counterpart. laguerita (111), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 20, 2009 Um, awesome. Great hop flavor with some good malty-ness as well. I was surprised by how drinkable this was, actually kind of light and very refreshing. rmalloy (195), los angeles, California, USA Jan 20, 2009 This was fine. I didn’t think it was a remarkable IPA. It was kind of boring. The hop profile didn’t have a lot of excitement to it. NobleSquirrel (1100), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 20, 2009 Updated: Apr 9, 2009Bottle via trade from Stefanje. Finally get the chance to taste the Elder. Pours a very nice yellowy-gold with a dissipating sticking head with big bubbles. Nose isn’t as big as I had expected, though it’s pretty pungent and resiny. Distinct cannabis notes mixed with a touch of pine tar. Taste is pretty crazy. I went into this with Dreadnaught on my mind. This beer has turned me on my head as to how big of a difference between midwestern IIPA and west coast are. This is like if you took Ruination and made it imminently drinkable. Tastes of pine and gin, nice dry malt backbone and again resin and pungent notes of pure hops. Imminently drinkable and puckeringly delicious. Damn fine brew.
