So, there is no way it could have possibly lived up all of my expectations. Having said that, if I lived in SoCal, I’d drink it...ALOT. Great citrusy grapefruit nose. Color is brite! I have to wonder why they filter this beer. Filtering strips alot of the essential hop characteristics. So, as good as it was, how good would it be unfiltered? Overall, I am a very happy boy. Pours blonde, white head.
Aroma is hoppy, yeasty and fruity (grapefruit).
Taste, hoppy, lots of citrus and grapefruits flavors, giving a light bitter taste. There is a sublte light malty / caramel presence. A good IPA, but not really what I was expecting. Skyview (4020), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 26, 2008 Sampled during Surly D-Day from 22-oz bottle. Pours a clear golden pale brew with an average white head that quickly dissipates to a fine film, white ring and some spotty lacing. Aroma of heavy grapefruit and piney hop character with a hint of golden grain malt and some white pepper. Taste is medium bodied, some light carbonation with flavors of mostly grapefruit, grassy hops, some golden grain malt, and some light caramel. Finish has a lingering bitterness with some light caramel and golden grain aftertaste. Everything I expected in this highly rated double IPA. paiste2002 (152), Saugus, California, USA

Bottled 9/4/2008, it doesn’t get any fresher then this. Pours a beautiful crystal clear yellowish amber color with a nice white head that quickly falls and leaves some very nice lace. Aroma is citrus, pine, spruce, flowery sticky hops with a touch of caramel malt, awesome! Flavor is hops, grapefruit, pine, spruce and an underlaying caramel maltiness. Finish is grapefruit spruce bitterness. Overall a great beer that was a touch thin and could use a touch more balance in the malt dept. Stands up to the hype!

That was an understatement, the more I enjoy this fine brew the more I feel it’s near perfect. JaBier (1212), Capital City, Ohio, USA

Pours a medium amber with a 1/2 inch head. Aroma is grapefruit and hops with some malt on the back end. Flavor is hop that lets you know it’s there, but doesn’t slap you in the face. A touch of sweetness gives this beer a great balance. Finish was surprisingly a bit thin. The bottle is a few months old and the label emphasizes to drink it fresh, so that may have something to do with it. Still a very good IPA. Would love to try it fresh.
Updated 2.6.09 - Guess what? Got to try it fresh. Aroma is out of this world. Citrus notes are more pronounced while keeping the malt character. The flavor is also much more crisp. Truly outstanding stuff. rthbass (27), Vancouver, Washington, USA

Pours a clear dark yellow with thick head and great lacing. Immaculate hop funk aroma. Slightly barn-yardy. Mouth feel is thick without being syrupy and a light but perfect amount of carbonation. A great malt support team that envelops you mouth. Taste is all citrus! Tangerines, lemons, limes, grapefruits, passionfruits. At one point I thought I had accidently poured a glass of orange juice. Beautiful taste!! Reminiscent of a Bridgeport-type Hop Czar. Alcohol is low for an Imperial and nowhere to be found in the taste. IBU’s are VERY nicely kept in check. Amazing BEER!! blklab2007 (957), Connecticut, USA
| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 20/20 | Oct 22, 2008 Updated: Jan 17, 2009bottle brewed 9/4/08 poured into a tulip glass has an orange straw color and a thin white head that laced the glass nicely. aroma is a wall of hops delivering grapefruit, apricot, lemon peel, resins, and has a delicious dry hopped topper. sweet, fruited, and inviting. mouth feel is medium light with brisk carbonation that bites at the tongue a bit. flavor has a full malt body but the main attraction is the hops. bitterness picks up as it warms and a honey sweetness smacks the lips. grapefruit citrus mix is amazing up against pine and resins. finish gets hold and just hangs on with bitters and citrus coating the tongue. have wanted to try this one for a while and it does not let down it’s reputation.
