Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Thanks to Josh for the bottle. The bottle poured a perfect clear golden liquid, with a good amount of carbonation and a nice little head. Good lacing with this DIPA too. It smells fresh and sweet, a good amount of floral hops with a fruity sweetness. Its taste is a little less hoppy than the smell, but pleasing since I drank the beer alone. I would have needed food had I had more than 1. It has a light feeling in the mouth that finishes pleasantly. I’m happy to have had this DIPA!

Bottle from Davidson’s in Littleton, CO. Pours golden with a medium to thin white head. Smells like citrus, pine, flowers with some sticky, sweet caramel. Taste is phenominal, reminds me of Double Simcoe. Nice pine and grapefruit taste, some sweetness, great stuff. Full mouthfeel, great bitterness. I can drink this forever.

Draught at Falling Rock Tap House, GABF 2008. Pours dark yellow with an average, creamy, white head, mostly lasting with excellent lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (grain, cereal, meal), heavy hops (flowers, pine, spruce, grapefruit), average yeast (dough, sweat) with notes of apple and pear. Medium bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, light sweetness, heavy acidity and bitterness.

You could mistake this beer for a Christmas tree in the next room. Big and piny with some undertones, must, banana, peach. Light clear sparkly. A beautifully dense head which settle leaving prodigious lacing. Much lighter than expected. Tastes like a ruby red grapefruit rind. Bitter but with a soft finish. A brilliant DIPA.

Draught. Low bujt lasting off-white head. Clear golden body. Powerful hops piney aroma. Very bitter hops grapefruit flavor. Low carbonation and a long aftertaste. A bit too one sided in my opinion.

This is an incredible IIPA. It pours a beautiful dark yellow. It smells nice, but doesn’t give away the wallop its about to deliver to your tongue. Flavours of grapefruit, hops, and toffee really stand out. The grapefruit especially smacks you at first. While IPAs and even IIPAs aren’t my favorite style, this is one of the best I’ve had.

Pour is a shiny golden shade and the bouquet and mouthfeel are both heavily imbued with pine needles. This is about as good looking, smelling and tasting as a beer can get, and I’m happy we finally got distribution of this and Blind Pig up here.

This is completely and totally different from any Imperial IPA I have ever tried. Pours a dark yellow with little carbonation and a small white head. Aroma of grapefruit, orange, and kumquat or something. Taste is similarly fruity (especially grapefruit) but then the dry hops kicks in and gives this beer a bitter kick that is balanced out nicely in the end from the malt. Lacing is superb. Aftertaste is bitter and dry. An amazing beer!
