Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Hazy orange amber, small lasting white head.Strong cat piss musty nose. Piney grapefruit hop profile, thin bodied but still has good malt presence. Long long finish Not bad, but certainly not worth all the hype!!

On tap at Father’s Office. Pours a copper amber color with a big white fluffy head that leaves very creamy lacing. Nose is big on citrus, pine, and a general giant barrage of hops and lemony goodness. Flavor is huge on citrus, grapefruit, some tropical influence, big pine, etc. Finish is real bitter and has a touch of vanilla and cinnamon. Very tasty, impossible to stop drinking. Great beer.

[Bottle, thanks Guerde] Pours amber with a small off-white head that leaves good lacing on the glass. Really nice big citrusy aroma; tangerine, grapefruit rind, lime, maybe even some lemon, also noticed some little grassy notes towards the end. Taste is predominantly grapefruit with a solid caramel backbone. Good mouthfeel with a fairly long, dry finish. A very good IIPA...but I would still take fresh Hopslam over this.

(bottle, generously sent by Sparky27, thanks Eric!) pours hazy golden orange with a soapy white head that leaves sticky lacing. Aroma is full of citrus with orange peel, tangerine, mandarin oranges, a sweet undercurrent of caramel, The caramel starts to dominate as the beer begins to warm, with a slight scent of pepper as well. The taste is loaded with citrus, orange, a lot of lime, pineapple, and some caramel as well. The mouthfeel is medium with a lingering bitter finish. Quite a solid IIPA.

500 ml. Quite possibly the most balanced beer i’ve ever had. Aromas were fresh, and the mouthfeel was so smooth I couldn’t believe it was 8%. Thank God I have more of this to enjoy for the next few months.

I have had a few disappointing IPA’s lately and I am glad that for my 500th rating this one lived up to its billing. Huge, floral hop aroma - very flowery and fresh. Looked great as all 500mL fit perfectly into my glass - hazy golden straw body with a big white fluff head. Very bready malt backbone with a very light caramel sweetness. The Hop profile is fantastic - big grapefruit component with underlying pine even a light floral minty piece. Fantastic drink. 2 month old bottle - CAUTION! DO NOT AGE THIS DRINK! A 2 month old bottle nets a 3.8 rating. Like Subway Sandwiches, Drink Fresh!

Juicy citrus nose on top of a light golden body. Lots of citrus - tangerines, in the flavor. Tastes freshly squeezed. Medium bodied, with no coarse bitterness or hints of alcohol. A great IPA!
