COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

aroma of pure sour citrus and pine in that order, you can detect malts if you sniff long and hard..golden clear liquid with a slight amber hue, pure white foamy head (the hallmarks of a hop bomb)..flavor..I was right..grapefruity,lemony,minty,piney,delicious and refreshing..tingly and perfectly carbonated with a sour bitter finish..overall..as the other ratings and mine show it doesn’t get much better than this

I’d say this is a nostalgic beer for me and that’s why the rating is so high, but it’s way more about the beer. It’s got the hoppy start and a very tasty finish. You’d expect more bitterness given the happiness but it is very smooth on the back end.

poured from a bottle. Nose is potent from an arms length away with a big variety of stone fruit, citrus and grapefruit leading the aroma and flavor. Some subtler notes of juniper and pine. Wonderful beer that has the obvious credit to being on top.

It's perfect. Seriously. Perfectly hopped with the right balance of pines and citrus. Your palate dries from the bitterness and leaves a piney palate. The aroma is strong and smells of citra hops. It's not just hype. Bottle in SoCal. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

What separates this imperial IPA from all others is its cohesion and secondary attributes. In a world where most IPA’s are designed to explode your face upon first sip, the Pliny is a lesson in what a properly balanced imperial IPA should drink like. No discernible flaws. Not too much or too little of anything. Its an IPA that is shockingly smooth by any standard with a crisp, clean finish. 100 IBU beer without a trace of bitterness. Magical how well integrated this beer is.

Worth the hype. Much more subdued than the deScription implies (40% more malt and twice the hops). In the hands of an amateur that would translate to "thick, sweet sticky cat piss", but that's not what has happened here. The aroma is so pleasant- Pine, wild flowers and citrus. The flavor is big, but not malty. Light, bright and a little spicy. The finish is what gets me. Just like that, it's gone. No lingering hop resin or hairy tongue like some cheap ironically over hopped bullshit hipster IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

The aroma is astonishing. An earthy pine resin bouquet of hops. Amber alight with a unobtrusive and diminishing head. Did I mention that the aroma is astonishing? Taste of candied malt...ghostlike and disappearing. Hops appear in its stead...crisp and bitter...And again the aroma! I find myself in a pine hewn cabin deep in a wood, prostrate on a woven wool rug while the hops grow into the walls and eventually consume my being. And suddenly the vision is adrift. The finish so clean. So dry. An apparition really. One I want to experience again! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Rating #1571 20.03.2015 Birthday Brew Tour Stop #4 - PizzaPort Ocean Beach. The hype has killed me, killed me, killed me. Pours a darker amber, with a bubbly tan head. Aroma is citrusy, grapefruit hops predominant. Taste is extremely hoppy, lots of cool grapefruit notes - mild tropical, mild pine, mild orange zest. Extraordinarily balanced - the sweet, cookie dough malt met with doses of bitterness, and they all linger into the finish.Lovely DIPA.

Great beer, I mean great by the balance. Really standard well made west coast IPA so you shouldn’t expect some hazy Vermont-MA IPAs. Citrus, piney, tropical fruits aroma with some malt backbone. Little bit boozy and kind of salty but the great balance and hoppiness make this beer the best IIPA in the whole world.
