COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Overheard a guy say, "I’m kinda underwhelmed, I mean the best thing you can say about it is that it’s perfectly balanced". Lol. Fantastic IPA

Backlog rating. Colin Brings The Goods tasting at Kernel tap room, London. It pours an unclear light golden color with a large white soapy head. Aroma is intensely hoppy, fresh, crispy, and piny, with notes of grapefruit, dank, grass, citrus peel and resin. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter, not much in the way of booze. Notes of pine cones, toffee, citrus leaves, grapefruit peel, light dunk, bread, biscuit, orange zest. Finishes lightly bitter and dry, quite citrusy. Overall, delicious, even if Colin says its past its glorious absolute peak days. In any case, many thanks Colin for such great generosity, cheers!

520 ml Bottle. Tasted on 12/19/14. Bottle courtesy of Espo. Bottle date 11/12/14. Outstanding aroma from this one with great floral & citrus notes. The taste was balanced with tons of hop flavor without being overly bitter. A great beer overall. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Quintessential IPA. I've been waiting and waiting to get my palate around this beer, and the time has finally come. Pure delight from the first sip to the last.

Pours a nice deep gold color. Smells floral and hoppy. Tastes amazing! Tastes bitter and hoppy, but no over done on either end. Such a shame that we don’t see this more than once a year!

This beer is all about freshness. From the many warnings on the label to the date of bottling printed on the bottle (purchased from the brewery) which was less than a week earlier. And the aroma and taste all speak about it. That’s what makes the brew special but other than that, I did not find it particularly outstanding. Still worth trying it.

UPDATED: DEC 11, 2014 Nose of floral citrus. Taste is grapefruit, citrus peel and pine balanced with subtle caramel and sweetness. Rich depth of flavor and mouth feel. Finishes wonderfully clean and dry. Impressive the way the flavors blend so coherently. Alcohol and hops well hidden in richness of flavors. Bitterness only at the finish. Uncommon and outstanding. Not an everyday brew.

Hard to find the words...Pliny is simply the best, the Platonic ideal of Imperial west coast IPA. A beautiful orange, with thin white head and continuous little streams of bubbles. Aroma is citrus, hops. Taste is powerful grapefruit and pine balanced with subtle caramel notes. Nice depth of flavor and mouthfeel; delightfully chewy. Finishes wonderfully clean and dry. Hard to analyze as the flavors merge so coherently here. Alcohol perceptible only in richness of flavors. Near perfect.

(Embouteillée le 1er septembre, bue le 1er décembre - Est-ce que 3 mois est trop vieux pour une Pliny? Let’s see!

On draft. Aroma-free? (At least here.) Nice lacing. Flavors of grapefruit, orange, hazelnut (walnut?) and something bitter and chewy at the finish. Flavors come in waves. Still a classic.
