Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncleís legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

First, Iím rating this about a month after Iíve had it, but I felt like this is the perfect time to do so... right after a bad rating by Dennrat.

Aroma is one of the most pleasant IPA floral bouquets that I had the privilege of smelling. There are some that are comparable, but this is right there at the top of the list.

Appearance: Just what a double IPA should look like.

Taste: The Simplisty of this Double IPA is what makes it so good. It is perfectly balanced and to the exact opposite of what Dennrat says the bitterness is at the beginning and smooth the rest of the way. Obviously Dennrat has not had many IPAís or DIPAís. If your taste buds havenít adapted to the bitterness yet I could see Pliny being bitter.

Palate: It is very drinkable and smooth, but in its simplicity I wish it would linger a bit longer.

Overall: I loved it and appreciate it for what it is. When I see it again I will buy as many as they let me :) PS. Sorry to single you out Dennrat, but you obviously are not an IPA fan. Just donít understand why you would rate one of the best DIPA when it is not what you like?

12 oz pour from chilled tap into a nonic pint glass at Russian Riverís restaraunt and tap house. It took 40 minutes to get in the door, but it was worth it. Golden and clear with a fluffy white head and aggressive and enjoyable carbonation. Nose is citrus, pine, and flowers. Body is full and creamy with a crisp finish. Taste starts with a blast of citrus, then some pine, then a lot of hops bitterness and some tropical fruit. Leaves pine and tangerine on the tongue with a plesant lingering bitterness. Nice sweet malty backbone behind everything. Lots of complexity and lots of layers. A whole bunch of hops tastes. Definitely one of the best imperial IPAís Iíve had, though I wouldnít say the best outright.

Thanks to Drew and Priority Mail - Brew date 4/21/15- Pours a nice light gold/yellow with a big white head. Nice piney and floral aroma. Hoppy, mild bitterness , well balanced. This is a nice easy beer to drink. maybe a little over rated by some but I would defiantly drink this again anytime I had the opportunity.

Tap at the brewery with commonshawn, rosskyle, and wildcard. Beer #2 at a seriously awesome brewery. Pint glass. Lighter in color than anticipated with gold and orange starring. Minor white head with great lacing. Grapefruit on the nose...very refreshing. Another nearly perfect beer. Bitterness offset by a sweetness and alcohol presence. Aftertaste has pine and resin but perfectly resides in the mouth. (I donít even know what that means but itís a good thing) Highly recommended.

Tap at brewery with commonmac and rosskyle and wildcard. Dark gold with white head. Very hoppy clean nose. Perfect balance of hop and sweet and alcohol. Some citrus pine resin. Very clean. Basically the perfect double ipa.

Many thanks to Werckmeister for this bottle! Bottles 27.02.15. Very floral in the nose. Leaves, Grapefruit. Fresh and smooth beginning. Sweetish fresh body. Very smooth. The sweetish body is a bit too hich, but the hops are great piney and floral. Fresh, nice bittered. smooth. Sweetish-bitter aftertaste. Fresh. Great brew but not too exceptional!

Nose is fruit, peach, apricot, with slight boozy. Great flavor, soft pine, resin, with very mild notes of biscuit. Early sweet, mild bitter middle, with a dry bitter finish. Brilliant, thanks to Benny B for hauling it back to Minnesota for me.

on draft in SF. color was perfect for an IPA. Smell not overwhelming but pleasant. a little too much bitterness for my liking, but not bad. Not my favorite IPA out there but still a very good one.

Finally got to try this. Thanks Brian for bringing this back from California. Bottled on 4/21. Perfect golden body with a wonderful white head. Tons of pine in the aroma. Puts you right in the mindset of walking in a pine forest. Huge bitter pine flavor with tons of citrus taste. So good. Seems like an excellent balance of pine and citrus, probably leaning more on the pine side. Oddly, there was still some left in the bottle after the bottle share, so I went back for seconds..
