Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncleís legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Bottled on 5/31/2012. Thanks to my boss for getting this for me while on a business trip. Huge hop character in aroma and flavor. Some malt shines through in the middle only to be washed out with another hoppy wave at the finish. This beer is intense. Full bodied. Medium carbonation. Probably not something I could drink everyday (Probably blasphemy to most?), but definitely something Iím glad I got to experience in the Eastern U. S. of A.

Brewed on 3/19/15; opened and consumed on 4/18/15. I must say for New Hampshire getting to try this within 30 days on the born on date is pretty good. Light orange almost honey in color with a pretty solid frothy head that dissipates to a bubbly cap on top. Streaks of lacing transform to spotty in nature all the way down the glass edges. The aroma of pine, resin, citrus, and floral hops is rather subdued with nothing too overpowering. Flavor profile for this Imperial IPA is quite delicious. The pine and resin start off the flavors with a very nice grapefruit taste finishing the profile. Solid bodied and only a slight bitterness on the back end of the palate with a nice creamy mouthfeel. Overall, Pliny the Elder really does live up to the hype and is an awesome example of an double imperial ipa.

Poured into the obligatory ipa glass. Hazy goldenrod color with a frothy exactly white head. The aromas are pungent with tropical fruit, peach and apricot with some lemongrass and clean hops. Taste is complex. All kinds of flavors including the aforementioned fruits with some grassy notes and a nice malty sweetness. I wish I lived closer to RR...

Pint at RR. Huge pine aromas, lemon zest, grass. Very smooth on the palate, dry bitter finish. Super drinkable. Great beer despite the hype.

Bottle. This had a thick but enjoyable body that was pleasantly surprising. Each ship produced layers of fruity hoppy goodness. The balance is extremely well done.

Draft. Clear radiant deep golden. Creamy white head. Really clean moderate bitterness. Great balance. Smooth and supple. Bittersweet. An array of hops all in unison. Everything just flows together. Does not go down like a beer of its size. Elegant.

510ml bottle into tulip. Minneapolis. Bottled 4 weeks ago. Pours golden-orange in color. Slightly hazy. Beautiful white head. Aroma is just great. Tropical : mango, pineapple, citrus. A hint of apple. A hint of resin. Taste is very well balanced. Bitter, but not at all excessive. Sweetness to counter. Medium body. Mild carbonation. Soft texture. Long finish.

One of best IPAs very big in fresh grass hops and resin pine. Flavor is equally as hoppy fresh hoppy, flavors of mango happiness and big fresh pine on finish.

Sharp bitterness at the start that rides out to a smooth finish. Strong grapefruit, pine and soft malts are especially well balanced. Incredibly drinkable. I donít want this to end.
