COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Bottle from mikem409 and his amazing generosity. Pours translucent golden amber with a thick foamy slight off white head that’s leaves intricate lacing pattern. Nose of grapefruit, pine, and tangerine. Taste adds a canned peaches. Solid malt body.

poured from 510ml bottle, clear copper, creamy white head that sticks around for a while. loads of citrussy resinous hop on the nose, hint of grapefruit. The taste is amazing, there’s just so much flavor, a really complex satisfying bitterness that’s intense and smooth, can’t really taste malt. feels luxurious in my mouth, this is just fantastic beer

Bottle, thanks to Misterburd! Clear golden yellow with large off-white foamy head, floral hops aroma, medium carbonation, delicious sweetish balanced hops taste, smooth body, long flavorful hoppy finish. This is as good as it gets for a DIPA!

A very solid DIPA. This beer is really much lighter in color than I expected, and is a crystal clear golden with good head and nice hoppy aromas. The beer is very drinkable despite being 8% alcohol. It’s not overly sweet like some double’s can be, but is a great example of DIPA.

Enormous thanks Alberto for sharing this! Finally! Golden body with a small white head. Light hop-driven aroma, pine, vaguely citric. Herbal, piney but fruity too taste, strawberries, tropical fruit, somewhat dry and sweetish. A solid, slightly too excessive malty backbone.... oof. it’s very good but I have to say that I expected far more.

On tap at Beachwood bbq seal beach. Clear golden lots of lacing. Fruity citrus piney aroma. Heavy hard n hoppy. Long lasting fantastic iipa. Really manageable bitterness but still deep and even a bit like chewing hops. For the style this is the best.

14 days old bottle, august 27th 2015. Finally got the chance to have a Pliny, I was wondering if it could justify the hype, after all it’s a double ipa, a style there is released about one zillion new brews of each day. This is supposed to be one of the kings on the hill. The fruity hop aroma works well with the crisp malt. Fruitness is dominating with strong tropical notes, flowers, resin. Taste has a nod of sweet malt, mostly hop driven as well. Bitterness comes through easily, making a dry and crisp yet fruity beer. Little to suggest this is a strong double as the malt and sweetness is hidden away behind the hops here. Zesty and full of resin I conclude the hype is more or less justified.

Popped into the Russian River Brew Pub in Santa Rosa on a trip to northern California. One of these led to a couple more plus the purchase of a growler and a case of bottles. This is the holy grail of IPAs. It is arguably the best IIPA I’ve ever had. A rich goldern color with a lovely frothy white head that lasts to the bottom of the glass. A hoppy aroma with notes of citrus, pine and an ideal amount of malt, citrus-y with a perfect balance of hops and malt. Delicious!

Bottle dated 4/26/16. Pour is clear golden with a nice fluffy head. Aroma is quite delicious: peach, mango, pine, grapefruit, mild sweetness, really nice. Lots of bitterness on the tongue, but that pine and grapefruit make a strong showing as well. Dry finish, a gem of a West coast IPA.

510 ml (?!) bottle bought in Mill Valley, CA. Clear dark golden in the glass, mid size white head. Very fruity in the nose. Taste starts smooth, fruity, malty, followed by a more floral hopy sequence. Nearly creamy texture. Nice not too bitter aftertaste. Enjoyed it!

Draft at RR. Peach, mango, grapefruit with a dank soapy sweetness. So well balanced. Tastes like fresh weed smells (more so than any other IPA). Every time I think maybe this is maybe slightly overhyped I am proven wrong. This is so, so good. Blind Pig is nearly as amazing but this is still the gold standard.
